This is my Saturday night rant. I just got an email from someone locally I don't know. He basically said his kid is graduating from college and him and his wife are trying to expose him to companies. I get these types of "Mommy and Daddy trying to find kid a job" mails about once a month. Not from the young adult... but from Mommy or Daddy...

So here's my rant. If you have a kid over 18, don't try and BUTT IN on their job hunt with prospective employers. You look like a fool and I toss resumes out if mom and dad are involved. I've had "Daddies" call and scream at me on the phone because I won't give their anthropology-major or history-major son/daughter a job. I even know of one guy that took his mommy to work on the first day (he was 22) so she could read the forms he filled out and approve them before he signed them. The company terminated him on the first day when Mommy showed up.

Sheez... let your kids be adults. Or let them live at home for the rest of their lives because you can't let go... tell them the "rich are sticking it to them" which is why they are losers.

My mom still buys me underwear.

Damn.....I was gonna see if my 16yo could start on Monday  I mean you didn't need to meet her or anything.... So this is what success in business does for you? I've seen this happen to many owners, at all levels of business. To me it's the first clue as to why not to hire them. Let um wax Four Suns, if they make it thru that then talk to them

It must be an East Coast thing because my firm in Chicago is hiring extensively, for us, and have yet to hear or see any parental beseechings on behalf of their offspring. But if we did, the prospect would be immediately black balled!!!!

In my trucking days,

We had a guy that brought his Dad to work with him so the Dad could back the truck up for him. :wow:

I have a friend in HR for a big company. They have "helicopter parents" regularly try to affect hiring, reviews, and promotions of their kids. Many parents seem to be either making a pet of their kids or trying to relive their lives through them.

LOL, That's too funny Four Suns! Just how stupid can these parents be?

More Bullsh*$ from the "everybody gets a trophy" crowd.

Lots of students without work. We paid for our children's university and bought them a used car when they were going to school. When they graduated we stopped giving them money and paying for car insurance and gas. Great motivator to find work. Both got work.

I hired a buddy's daughter a few years ago, a few weeks later I had to let her go, her resume showed she was competent, her references said she was competent and her dad who is a regular customer said she was competent, I hired her based on her resume and references, it's a very busy bar/restaurant and she wasn't competent, her dad hasn't talked to me since.

I have two daughters, a couple years ago my oldest 18 at the time wanted a part time job, I told her that her first job cannot be with me, she put her resumes out and was hired at a busy restaurant, was trained and did a great job, 6 months later asked if she could come work for me and I said yes, she's an awesome sever and knows how management works. my youngest is 17 and would make a great hostess, she works at Starbucks part time.

The kids nowdays expect to be hired right out of college and think that starting at the bottom is being direspected just because they have a degree in whatever and that makes up for zero experience in the job they think they are ready to do not to mention that they expect top pay right out of the gate. Wonder what they teach in college these days. Back in the day we were happy to have a job and knew that we had to work our way up. Not any more.

When I started to work in the oil buisness regardless of what you were to do you were sent to one of the districts and got to work with each trade group. If you made it you got to return to the head office. If you did not make it with good reference from district superintendent your career was very limited.

My mom post on clubsearay for me. I have had parents ask for me to meet with them about their kids job prospects and they get pissed when I say no and/or ignore the request. Many times they think I should create a job for their kid. Even when there is no opening.

The business I run is one of the largest employers in the southern half of the state. I'm always amazed at the tactics many people will use, including my favorite which is working my parents and familiy. I understand networking, contacts and just how hard it is to find jobs in general therefore I'm always (ok, usually) polite and try to be helpful. But, I no longer answer the phone and my daughter commented the other day that she doesn't blame me for not wanting to go out much locally since I always get approached by someone while shopping at Walmart, eating dinner, etc. Gary, I guess its the price you pay.

This may be related to the types of businesses being discussed on this thread. I ran a large business (hospital) for 34 years and do not recall ever being asked to hire a friend's child. Almost all of our positions required very specific training and a registration of license. Kind of a "no tickie, no washie" situation. We also hired on a regular basis even during recessions.

Gee Whiz Gary, I ask one little favor...................................

Man,

I've been there , done that. My brother mostly hires these kind of cases. Usually it's one of his Law Enforcement buddies or acquaintances and he's quick to say yes. Then we are left to deal with their incompetance. Some do work out but, a fair amount are just plain terrible. Then we can't fire them because my brother doesn't want to offend the parent. That just never seems to work out. I even had a bartender come in referred by a good customer. She worked a week and a half and I had to fire her. Fortunately he didn't take it personal.

I like your idea of making the kids work elsewhere first. I hadn't actually thought of that but it makes sense. I will have to remember that when the time comes. Maybe I can ask Gary to hire them!!

One person I know who owns a large oil field construction company requires all crews to be made up of 10% just out od school. His idea 9 will leave or get fired the 1 left will be good. His idea is he needs young people. The ones that stay he makes take a trade like welder, pipe fitter, carpenter, electician. Good crews and happy ones. He seems to get more produtivity out of them tan other companies.
His favorate saying seems to be "Feeling blue skid a few"
