I've briefly looked through this site for info on repainting the B3 outdrive, but couldn't find anything. Could someone enlighten me (us) on the steps necessary and proper way to repaint the outdrive?

I've never repainted the entire outdrive but have touched up the lower skeg area. I'm not sure how proper this is but it worked for me. Thoroughly clean any barnacles or scum with a hull cleaner like Zing or an equivalent (Starbrite) product. Use gloves and read instructions. Then wash with soap and water, dry and sand out any knicks with sandpaper. I've used JB weld to fill in any knicks in the skeg. Coat any bare areas with metal primer spray paint and two coats of black spray paint. Mercruiser makes a spray paint also but regular black paint matches up pretty well. Make sure you don't plug the speedometer inlet on the leading edge of the drive, very small hole above the hub.

my crownline was kept in brackish water, so barnacles were not a big problem. i had the boat from new (2002) til i sold it mid-season 2004. each spring before launch, i scraped the couple of barnies off, lightly sanded the whole drive with a fine sandpaper, masked the decals (one year i replaced them completely) and sprayed with either mercruiser black or krylon - i've used both. i also used masking tape and newspaper to mask the entire transom and plastic bags to cover the duoprop. worked well for me and kept things looking shiny-new.

Each year I found that the only nicks and marks were on the area from the cavitation plate downward. I painted this area each year per the instructions in the Merc service manual.

I would wash and dry the drive.
I follow the wash by scuffing the existing paint(sand paper) on the drive removing all traces of sheen. I would then use a Zinc Chromate based primer and give the drive three good coats allowing each application to dry prior to applying the next. I would then apply several coats of Merc Phantom black giving the drive the new look again... careful as the phantom black likes to make unsightly runs in the paint if applied to thick... light properly distanced passes and patience are key. Give the multi-coat application of phantom blac several days to dry as it stays takes a good while to get it completely dry.
