Painful Weekend - Need Perspective

Your story scares me Ed. Keep us posted on progress (in your spare time).

Glad you made it home OK. And if you were in HdG, we were right down the Bay a bit, and that was one hell of a line of storms that blew through Sunday morning...

Ed,
I do not know your relationship with PWM, but my guess is they will simply turn around and call Cummins Power Systems out of Glen Burnie, MD.

Zack is the Cummins Marine Tech there who does all the work on my engines that is out of my comfort level--valve lash adjustment as an example. Zack was on the sea trial of Truly Blessed and has done the non-operator services every year since. He is good people. If you are out of warranty (or in warranty but Cummins will not cover the repair due to overheating) then I'd eliminate the PWM middle man and contact Cummins Power Systems directly.

They also have a warehouse operation in Pennsylvania for Cummins and Onan parts. I can get most rountine maintenance and repair items in 24 -48 hours via Fedex.

Good luck with it

+1 on Zach from Cummins Power Systems...good people no doubt!

PWM will be down this week, and I have a slot with Cummins the week after - didn't get a chance to really investigate. I checked the strainer but it was fine, everything else was a mess and as its the port engine, access to the impeller is impossible except for 1:35 scale people. We're off on vacation this week anyway (now not on the boat) so so far, we've not missed any boating. But I'm sure this is going to hurt....

I guess I'm a lightening rod for bad luck!

Nasty weather to be sure. We waited until the worst of it blew through and then left around 1215. We saw two sedan bridges heading south out of HdG - guess not you? Nice part of the bay, plan to go back if we can get the boat fixed.

Fingers crossed on extended warrantee!

So far so good. PWM called and basically said - we're going to be a middle man - we'll come if you want but why not let Cummins handle this and save the $ of our trip - they are taking care of the warrantee stuff (assuming it works) regardless. So that was a good trustworthy move on their part.

Cummins came - sheared water pump shaft. Wasn't on our list of options - Zach said that this actually happens periodically - sounds a bit bizarre - shafts aren't meant to "shear".

We'll get that replaced and see if there is any collateral damage - he ran it a bit and said no knocks or anything - fingers crossed.

Lesson - exhaust sound change = loss of raw water. Not much I could have done anyway since the alarm went off right away.

On a slightly different topic - since the boat was down we moved our vacation from a week on the bay to a week in New England. What a wonderful place - clean water, nice weather, plentiful lobsters- it was a bit like Gary's trip except without the boat and fuel bill part. Mystic, Block Island, Newport, Narragansett, night time striper fishing with eels, all a great time. So we took lemons and made lemonade. And wow- houses are CHEAP up there compared to Bethany or Duck.

Sounds like it may be solved? Hope so! Good job on the back up plans. I used to live there, and have tried to get the family back to share with them what I saw as a child. It was spectacular. We lived in Brenton Village very close to Ft Adams. It was abandoned when I was there, so we had free reign of the place. My house was across the street from the old horse stables which were situated on Brenton Cove, just across the water from 3 mansions. We used to hike through the woods to find ponds to ice-skate on in the winter. We'd walk up to a house with a 20' high front door and ask the butler if we could skate on their ponds. Great memories.

Pump replaced - not part of extended warrantee. CPS thinks we're ok - will try her this weekend - hopefully no additional damage. Painful....

Good luck with it. After my bad overheat the mechanics told me "I'd know it" if the heads were warped due to the amount of compression in the engine. I'd keep an eye on the coolant level just to be sure.

I'm guessing that yours wasn't so bad, since they didn't even recommend you change your oil...

Zach said I could expect to need to add another half gallon of coolant due to air pockets. We'll see how she holds under load - what fun. I think (fortunately) that some of the temps I saw on the smartcraft were intake air temps rather than fluid temps since the aftercooler would have been rendered ineffective. Still kind of scary....thanks for the support!

Closing this thread. We did a crab run today and had no issues with the engine - performed perfectly - given the crap on the hull of course. On to the next issue....

Ed - Is the extended warranty the Brunswick one (Passport Premiere), if so the Engine Water Coolant / Circulating Pump is clearly spelled out as a covered part.

It is the Liberty one - I need to do a little research but everyone has said "not covered". I haven't had a chance to go through the papers which are just a trifold anyhow.

Thanks for the data point however.
