Oxygen sensors

Hey Sgt, just wanted to see how this was coming along.

Are you still getting the alarm?

I am, I have a friend in OK that is shipping his scan tool to me this week. So hopefully next weekend I'll be able to see what the deal is and clear the fault.

I've has similar issues with O2 sensor fault. Cleared itself last season, but it is back again.

Thanks David, I had the same message (O2 sensor) about a month ago, cycled the key switch 4 times(run engine for 10 mins and switched key to off position for 15secs) between 3rd and 4th cycle codes cleared. 12 hours later I'm getting the same fault message on smart craft just now it's a different fault code. Before it was codes 115-118 no it's just 30. Mercury tech told me about key switch cycle reset.

Thanks for the tip on key switch cycle reset - will try that.

Anyone else have success with this cycle reset?

It didn't work for us. However, we went ahead and bought the scan tool after replacing the sensor and still alarming. Hubs ran through everything and no other issues. Knock on wood, after resetting the code, we have been good to go.

Thanks. You had to use the Rinda scan tool to reset the code?

Did anyone ever find the cause and solution for this? I ran through some shallow weeds the other night and threw a code 32: STBD EXHAUST OXYGEN SENSOR IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY

I did the switch and move around of the sensors to isolate the bad one, with no change to code. No apparent loss of power, but it’s annoying.

I’ve read a lot on this and some people point towards the catalyst between O2 sensors… but nothing definitive. What goes wrong on the catalyst?

Other threads mention finding an O2 sensor wet. How would this happen or affect performance/code throws? Bad riser seals?

Yesterday I went out for a few hours, just dealt with the beep every minute or so. After a few hours of putting around staring at homes I can’t (yet) afford, it now threw a code 49: FUEL SYSTEM… something I can’t remember.

I don’t think the fuel or emission systems are working improperly. I think something is causing the emission system to go out of spec, which in turn is cause the fuel system to compensate and also go out of spec.

Thoughts?

water kills those things, they make a fitting that keeps it further away from it.

Why would there be water in the riser though? They look pristine like they were recently replaced. I have only owned the boat since this past September.

Might want to call your closest dealer and see if you are still covered under the Mercruser emission warranty.

I want to say it's like 10 years after the boat was 1st purchased or something like that.
Thanks, I could try that but it’s a 2011, likely I’ve just missed it.

Of course there's water, and a common problem.
Do a search on OSO for that fitting that distances it

But why would there be water in there??

Is it only for the post-cat sensors that get wet?

I’ve replaced both starboard side sensors and the problem remains. I don’t think the sensors are bad. Could water be getting on the catalyst and degrading performance of the catalyst itself, tricking the computer into thinking there’s something wrong with the sensor?

also, when i unplug the post cat sensor I get a 116 code, but it resolves when I plug it back in. However when I unplug the pre-cat sensor I get no code. I wonder if there’s something wrong with the connection going to the computer or the computer itself

thoughts?

Clearing the code would be a good start, if you replaced them and they're dry. Call merc customer support they will have some input for you.

If I had one I would. Rinda’s website says sold out. Anyone near space coast of florida with one?

Shouldn’t it clear itself when the problem is resolved anyway?

Codes don't tell you what part is bad. Codes tell you what page to open up the book to and do the necessary pinpoint test. Proper diagnosis is 85% of the job, anybody can throw parts at it costing you lots of money unnecessary. A good DVOM and the ability to read live data are key.
