It has been a crazy couple of weeks so just now getting to post a trip report from September 13 & 14. We towed the boat from the house to a boat ramp on the ICW a few miles south of the Great Bridge area. We went north until we hit Great Bridge - called for the opening and went through - you can just see the Great Bridge locks down the water.

The lock was a new experience - had never been through one before. Followed the instructions and tied off with slack on the port side and sat back and waited. It looked like the water level difference was about 2 feet. Here the lock gates are opening for us so we can continue our trip into the Portsmouth/Norfolk area.

We brought both dogs on the trip - Tigger the Boxer and Buddy the Mutt - they appeared to have a great time!

On the way up we took a little detour into the Dismal Swamp Canal. You can almost make out the sign.

We found a small beach and let the kids and dogs off for a swim.

After our little detour we went under the High Rise bridge - seeing the cars like this was a bit strange....

We finally made it into the harbor in Portsmouth and took a little tour. We saw the Disney Magic in drydock which was cool since it was the boat we had taken our cruise on a couple of years ago.

It was now starting to get a little late so we started looking for a place to stay for the night. We hadn't done much planning but didn't figure we'd have much problem. We ended up at the Tidewater Yacht Marina - really nice place - really nice place to hang out. It rained briefly while we were cleaning up for dinner but we ended up with a great sunset.

We had a great dinner at The Deck at the marina and went back out sleep on the boat for the first time. It was nice to have the A/C on and coming back to a cool cabin after it had been so hot during the day! Kids getting ready for bed:

The next morning we continued our tour of the harbor. We saw the USS Harry S Truman - looked like it was in for some work as no planes or personnel were onboard.

We went out a little further and saw a container ship being loaded up. Was a cool thing to watch after just having watched a similar thing on Discovery with the kids. Always better seeing the real thing!

We decided to start heading back as we had seen a cool little cove near the High Rise bridge where we wanted to go swimming and have a picnic. On the way out we got a good shot of the ferries which run in the harbor.

We made our way back to the Dismal Swamp Canal entrance and went down a little less than a mile and found a party going on.

Had a great cookout - little BBQ chicken and we were on our way home. The weather was great and it was just a wonderful weekend on the boat with the family!

Why did you trailer your boat up to Great Bridge instead of just coming up the ICW?

It was mainly due to gas prices... the prices spiked that weekend to over $4.00 a gallon and I knew we would end up burning quite a bit. The other was time - we got a late start and didn't hit the water until after 1 and we wanted as much time on the water as possible. The next trip we want to do is up the ICW through Elizabeth City - hit the Dismal Swamp Canal and then come back around in a loop.

Awesome pitures. Looks like a great time. It's posts like this that make me jealous of you east coast guys - lots of cool boating destinations. Makes lake boating seem kinda boring. That is until a hurricane boils up. Thanks for the post:smt038.

Travis,
Thanks for sharring. Looks like a neat trip.
Now if you want to talk about locks. Here is a real lock.

That is what boating is all about! Wife, Kids, pets and nothing else to cloud your mind like work or work around the house...Thanks for sharing.

Pics looked very familiar. We have stayed at Tidewater quite a few times, nice place, great pics, thanks for sharing.

We have never been past the marina on the Elizabeth River/ICW...on our to do list.

Thanks guys - it was a great weekend. Now that the boat is fully sorted out and the kids and dogs did good being on the boat that long we are planning more trips! This area is full of great places to go and we're looking forward to going to as many of them as we can!

Chuck - where is that lock!?!? I was a bit intimidated just going into this one with a 24" change.... :smt043

Keep me posted, perhaps we can meet up during one of your trips and/or share a trip with you and the family. I might also turn to you for advise/suggestions if/when we decide to go a little further south past Tidewater.

Be careful... Greg will have a hard time making a decision on where to go and when to leave... ;-)

It's NW of Charleston. We went through it on the CSR Charleston trip last year.

The Pinopolis Lock at Santee Cooper's Jefferies Hydroelectric Station was the highest single-lift lock in the world at the time of its construction. In it, boats up to 150 feet can be raised or lowered the 75 feet difference between the Tailrace Canal and Lake Moultrie.

Sounds good to me. Lots of places to go around this area and I want to get to as many as I can.

Now that's funny right there.... :smt043Sorry Greg...

Chuck - I'm going to have to look that one up. We wanted to go Charleston this year and just haven't been able to get things worked out. Might make a great spring trip though!

edit - I love this one from the link you gave:
Step 1: Push the button and when someone answers request a lock operator. Please allow 15 minutes for the operator to arrive.

I guess they don't monitor 13....
