I just took my boat out for the first time and my starboard engine is over heating. It looks as if the antifreeze is not circulating. Usually i see it circulating from the over flo tank to the engine but i got nothing. When i popped the cap off i dont see anti freeze filled to the top....not sure if i should.

I just had my impellers changed before i put the boat in. I see water coming out the sides so i take it that they are working fine.

Any guess whats going on here guys???

The 454 has a circulating pump as well as the raw water pump.
They seize sometimes and have to be replaced. Not expensive or hard to do.

Don't rule out a stuck thermostat either. If it doesn't open your engine will overheat. I would start with that first and if a new thermostat doesn't solve the problem then it may be the recirculating pump.

Is that thermostat also called a riser????

No, The thermostat is at the front of the engine on top with hoses hooked up to it.
Riser are a major part of your engine / cooling system ( keeps them separate ) JG

I second the thermostat failure

Bill he is perfect... Never had to ask anything. And never offers help either. Ignore him. Good luck with ur overheating issue let the rest of us know if u need help

Where is the recirculating pump located??

It is at the front of the engine, straddles the timing cover, and is driven by the serpentine belt. It is part number 1 in this illustration.

DJ,

Good info and picture from Dave S.

It's the same as the water pump on a car. The thermostat is easy to change; after you get it out, put it in a pot of water and turn on the heat - as the water approaches boiling, the thermostat should open. If it doesn't, that solves it, a new thermostat is the fix. IF it does open, then it may be the recirculating (auto water pump) pump, or air in the closed cooling system causing a blockage.

well i found out my issue!!!! There was no coolant in the system. It took almost 2 gallons. So the ass that changed my impellers must have not filled it back up.

Would you loose coolant when the impellers are changed?? Thats the only reason it could be missing there is no leak in the system that i can see

Well. . .considering that you have to take the system apart to change the impeller (I presume you mean the recirculating pump impeller). . .I would bet a nickle that the system was emptied to do the work.

Last year, I had a jet ski serviced and recieved the unit back with the entire air intake assembly disassembled. Heck. . .the seat didn't even fit on properly because the center support had been removed for access. So I understand about getting a job 95% complete from a *professional*. Most annoying.

Well glad to hear it was an easy find and hopefully no damage done. Now go out and enjoy the season

I really don't see the connection between the impeller change and no coolant in your block. As far as I know you don't have to touch (or drain) the closed cooling system to change the impellers. I don't doubt for an instant that you didn't have antifreeze in the block but something doesn't sound right here.

Can you talk to the folks who did the service work about why the engine did not have any coolant in it? Did you ask them to change the coolant? I am concerned there may be something else going on here that is not readily apparent if they didn't touch the coolant. Are there any signs of antifreeze in the bilge?

The impellor change has nothing to do with your closed loop cooling system. The impellor chage is attached to your raw water side of the system. Draining the closed side makes no sense.
