A few weeks ago was Getting mh 170 br ready to take out. I had the mufflers on and raised the outdrive fully and heard some "clacking" from the outdtive, lowered it abit and the noise went away.
Didnt think much of it....
Fast foward a week later, long story short, needed s jump on the water, sea tow came out, jumped me and he heard the boat running and said the upper gimble bearing was going bad. The boat was soundingba bit rougher, but not alot. Figuered the noise i heard when the outdrive was fully up was due to the bearing. Havnt had the boat out since, finally replaced the bearing, but still have the noise.
Is it due to the drive being fully up and that is normal?

what he said.:smt018

you are not supposed to run your motor at all in the trailer position and I would suggest you not run it in the full up position either. this puts tons of stress on that joint if you know what it looks like inside just imagine lifting it up and then trying to twist it. you are causing tons of stress on the bearings inside the uppper unit as well as the gimble bearing. it's a no-no. if you can get as far up as to hear clicking, you need to adjust your trim stops.

I dont, i'm not sure exactly why i had it raised at the time:huh:
Ok about adjusting trim stops.
Thanks
