Earlier this season, the paint on my outdrive began to peel. The boat is not kept in the water, used only in fresh water and at the time had less than 100 hrs. The paint that was coming off was thinner than paper.

After reading several posts here, I decided to take on the task of painting it myself. While at WM buying the needed supplies, I explained my situation to one of their employees. He indicated that he had seen the problem before and thought it might be a situation where the surface was not properly prepared.

I decided to contact Merc directly to see if I could get a reason for the paint failure. Since it was out of warranty I did not expect them to cover it. Merc directed me to my dealer, who on my behalf contacted Merc.

Merc has offered to replace the gear case under warranty. :smt038

I will try to get the reason for the problem when it goes in for the repair.

I have decided to keep the sandpaper, primer and phantom black paint to touch up the skeg later this year.

Always nice to hear when things go well.

I got a question your signature says:
2006 Sea Ray
215 WE 5.0L MPI Alpha One

I don't remember ever seeing a 2006 215 WE with 5.0L MPI and Alpha One. I looked at all of the boats at the local MM dealer in 2006 when I bought my boat and don't recall seeing that.
