After we got 2 scoops of bait at the bait dock today, we started heading out of the harbor after about a minute of running at no wake speed, 5mph, the temp gauge started to get a little high, a little over 180, it never runs that high . so I shut it down. Prior to that we ran from the ramp to the bait dock at normal temps about 170. I'm always looking at the gauges. Any way couldn't get the thing to cool down, checked the temps all over with the IR gun and risers were hot about 190 the normally run about 130. Got towed back in, released 2 scoops of nice fat sardines, pulled the boat out and ran it on the muffs. saw water comming out from under the water pump access. pulled that off and saw water spraying out of the water pump cover. Pulled the sea water pump off and saw I ate the impeller and the cover. The only way that I am aware of to eat an impeller is to run it without water, which I never do. Aside from possibly picking up a plastic bag around the out drive, at idle speed, which is what I think happened, Is there any other possibilities?

That could be it, or, it may have been time. They do need to be replaced about every 2-3 years or 100 hours, whichever comes first. More often in areas of sand...

John, I did a kit this year, it had about 18 hours on it. For sure it was lack of water through it. It got hot enough for the metal sleeve to start melting the plastic housing. I was suprised the impeller didn't loose hardly any material.

All fixed, tested, and good to go until the next break down. They need to have boat part stores out in the ocean. Like they have Auto Zones and Pep Boys all over the place:thumbsup:
