Good evening, CSR braintrust!
I am wondering if two observances I made today are normal or, indicative of something else I should attend to (what I haven’t a clue, thus this query).
First is the amount of carbon I came across. Photos 1 & 4
I took the attached pictures as I removed the Black Max prop on our 2018 DPX 190 w Mercury 150hp 4-stroke (motor has under 50 hours on it with occasional pulling an inflatable towable behind it (never more than 2 kids or 1 adult and 1 smaller kid. We changed the lower gear lube and engine oil and filter last Fall).
Second are Photos 2 & 3. That is, the ring of wear I came across at the furthest in or base of the prop shaft - not sure if that is anything that indicates something needs to be corrected or not?
(All’s I have to go on is past experience with a manual trans in a ‘73 Challenger - it has a 440Mag dropped in it out of a donor ‘70 GTX and I learned that ANY - even the slightest - wear on the front end of that shaft spelled certain trouble, down the line. But, I realize there is a likelihood that does not translate directly over to Marine craft prop shafts. Or, does it?
Thanks in advance for any experience / guidance you can share (this is our first boat and we are trying to do right by her!
