Time constraints and some challenging weather conditions kept us close to Ludington this year but we still managed to enjoy the season.

Very nice Play Dough. We are fellow east siders that trek west every weekend too. Spent one weekend a few slips down from you....but I don't believe you were around. Met some of your fishing neighbors though. Keep up the good work I enjoy your weekly recaps.

After 15 years at Harborview, we're giving serious consideration to a slip in Mackinaw City next year for a change of scenery and activities. We absolutely love our Harborview slip but hate dealing with the ferryboat soot and to be frank, the Ludington scene has become a little stale. We'll need to make that decision soon. All the seasonals at Harborview have become like family which is what makes the decision so difficult.

Glad you enjoy the blog. I have fun doing it.

Mackinaw! Very nice. Extreme decision.....I like it. Long haul but beautiful place to boat. We spent a week in the les cheneaux islands 2 yrs ago and loved it. Understand the dock neighbors challenge, you sure get close to them. We will probably move after this year and face the same situation. Planning to stage the boat as far north as possible (possibly mackinaw) at the end of next summer for a north channel trip the following year. I will follow along as your journey unfolds.

Play dough , that's a long haul each week my friend but I understand the soot and the scene. Good luck on the mackinaw thing too, we have never been there, we would like to do the North Channel again someday but this summer I'm taking my bride to Montana no boats just mountains , keep the blog up my friend

OK Play Dough, you can level with us. You really only caught 3 fish all summer but changed your clothes, took a pic with the fish, changed your clothes, took a pic, repeat, repeat, repeat.

Just kidding. Very nice pics and a good representation of your year. AND some VERY nice fish. Way to go.

Damn! You're on to my scam. Unfortunately, we weren't able to travel this year so all the boating was within 10 miles of the harbor. As scenic as it is there, it does make for a repetitive presentation. The next few years will be different. Retirement is near.

You should talk with some of the slip tenents in Mac City about soot. We've stopped going to the city marina because the ferries to the island run all day and into the evening. At the end of the day your boat will have black diesel all over it.

Interesting comment. We had to leave our boat and make sure a fan was blowing out of the cabin (negative pressure concept) anytime we were downwind from the Badger last year. It was as bad as we've ever experienced. After 2 hours in port, you could actually write in the soot with your finger on the boat deck.

My last two visits to Mackinaw were to Straits harbor but I have stayed at the municipal in the past and didn't notice the diesel issue. Are you referring to a waterline scum or an airborne substance? Something I'll need to consider. Thanks for the heads up.

Not the waterline soot. Our white gel coat and canvas got very dirty, but we were in the transient area across from Shepler's boarding area. We enjoyed watching the ferries come and go and did not notice the soot issues until a dewy morning. The bottoms of our shoes were blackened from walking on our outside decks. Rinsing the boat with fresh water caused black streaks. I gave up on cleaning and did a good clean up when we left. There is another marina option in the area that opened after we stopped going there so maybe soot is not an issue there. If there are ferries nearby your slip you will notice the "Badger Effect".
