A detailer damaged our boat name as well as the "410" on the transom. After agreeing to pay to fix them, he took off and hasn't been seen since - of course. I'm sure the boat name is of the vinyl decal type, but I'm not sure about the 410. We're having both reproduced but I'm not sure of the best way to remove the damaged name and numbers. I've done a "decals" search on the forum, but didn't see any specifics for the original numbers. Will someone please try to "walk me through" the process of removing these decals? Thanks very much.

David

If they are vinyl, use your wife's blow dryer on high to heat the edge. Peel that up and then heat the balance of the decale pulling and lifting as you go. Clean up with goo off or acetone. Acetone is the stronger solvent so make sure you rinse with water. Wipe the area down with acetone prior to installing the new decale with spray windex containing no amonia. Skeegee out the bubbles with a piece of stiff cardboard and let it dry in the sun for 48 hours. Wax and you are done.

Teh 410 is an embossed plastic piece with a thick clear coating ... can be had as a SR part from your dealer. To remove, I would use a strong fishing line and pull it between the decal and the fiberglass "cutting" it off, then use acetone to remove the remaining glue. On the name decal, using a heating gun CAREFULLY to warm and soften the decal workd good, then pull it off and also use acetone to remove teh glue remnants.

Replace it with a "380" decal and save a few dollars at the marinas....

My "410" decal was also removed. It was the same vinyl as the name on the transom. Who ever makes your new name can also make a new "410" label. Getting it to go "EXACTLY" over the old "410" shadow will be the trick...but quite honestly, shouldn't be a big deal...

Replace the 410 with a 380 decal. Cheaper slips pay for the repair. :)-)

David,

You could also check with fpmarine.com, they seem to have some Sea Ray number decals.

Hope that helps...

Ryan

Thanks for all the replies. Actually, I'm not really worried about getting a replacement "410" decal. My concern is how to remove the old one. Now I have two different answers - one is that it is plastic and needs to be removed with fishing line; the other is that it's just vinyl and presumably a hair dryer should work. Maybe I need to call Sea Ray and get it staight from the seahorse's mouth.

Ryan, with all the work we'll be doing, I'm sure I'll be seeing you in the very near future. In the meantime, I'll check out that site. Thanks.

That IS funny, but it also makes me wonder how many owners, less honorable than ourselves of course, have done something similar. Maybe not something so obvious, but say replacing the 410 with 400.

This really came into play in 1993. The 1992 35 Express was renamed a 37 Express in 1993. It was the same identical boat only with a different decal on the transom for marketing purposes. Guess what happen to all those new decals.

Interesting. But that wouldn't really be owners trying to cheat anyone. They would just be trying to prevent misunderstanding by those who could charge a higher fee.

Your answer depends on what you have for numbers. If you have a vinyl decal (thin) you need heat and your finger nail. If you have the thicker metal or plastic with adhesive backing you use the fishing line.

David:

removing the old we are all in agreement, use a heat gun to soften the vinly glue and peal off.

When you have a naked transom take the opportunity to clean it up like new. Go after it, wet sand the decal areas and the use two step buffing coumpound before the new decals go down. The wax after. You'll look brand new!
