I would begin by starting with the recommended cruising rpm which is what the engine manufacturer suggests and see what cruise speed you get. This is really where you want to run and a good rule of thumb on a gas engine is 3/4 w.o.t.. On a merc 8.1 I beleive that rpm is somewhere around 3450 . This is the best speed for engine longevity and depending on the drives will yield a fuel efficient speed. As for fuel flow I had installed a floscan computer in my 2001 310 dancer t350 horizon with zf63-4 v drives and at my recommended cruising rpm of 3650 I run at 21-22 kts. By adjusting the throttles and tabs (ever so slightly) I was able to fine tune to my best consumption of 11gph. The floscan is very user friendly in that it is graduated in 1gph readings and provides a good real time visual aid that reflects your imputs however slight very well. I had also installed a system view from smartcraft when I reengined to my new horizons but honestly I use the floscan for fuel consumption. The rig is easy to install and I believe is somewhere around 450.00 I use my smartcraft for reliable digital data from the engines e.g oil pressure and temp but find an analog display for fuel consumption easier. You may find my fuel consumption high but I am in south Texas where we are forced to use ethanol this combined with high ambient temps and humidity really hurt fuel efficiency so much that I had to re prop.Where can you find boat specific optimal cruising rpm's & gph consumption data?
