Have about a 5 degree difference in temperature on my engines at 1000 - 1200 RPM's. Starboat at about 165, the port at a 170. Are these temperatures OK?

Thanks,
Bob

I only have a 1 or 2 degree difference between the engines. At about 1200 RPM mine sit at 158/159 - the water here is a tad cooler than down south so that may help a bit. I can't remember for sure but I thought around 160 was normal .. .the 170 you have seems high.

Remember, the analog gauges on the older boats are not dead accurate, and a spread of 5 degrees could be something as simple as the difference between gauges and sending units. If it has always been that way, and hasn't changed, then all is well. Trending is the thing to be mindful of. If they were always the same, and one engine just jumped up 5 degrees, then you have some investigating to do.....

Get an IR temp gun and shoot readings at the thermostat housing for more accuracy.

I have the same engines - but port side runs a constant 9 degrees hotter. At 3200 rpm port gauge reads 174 and starboard 165. I change out my impellers on both engines (just as routine, not specifically because of this temperature issue) - and disconnected all hoses and checked water flow - but it is still the same. I am going to live with it. I like the IR gun suggestion. Thanks for asking this question. The responses were useful.

Had a chance to get the boat out on Lake Erie and ran at normal RPMs for a good period of time. Both engines held at 170 F at 3400 RPMs. While this is a little higher than most of you reported, I guess it could relate to the gauges. Everything functioned well. Thanks for your inputs.

ever try swapping the gauges to see if the difference follows them? As far as the original poster, a 5 degree difference is nothing. The tolerance on the gauges would do that.

I also have 8.1s and about five degrees difference 163 and 168 you have to remember that the gauges are not performance gauges
