So, after Easter Brunch, headed to the boat to get a start on spring chores. My guy is going to remove the shrinkwrap and recycle it on Wed, so I thought I would put up my canvas, which I had removed to clean and restitch. Surprise #1, my middle windshield glass just above the vent, is shattered. A million pieces, still in the frame thank God, but, WTF? No weight on it, what happened? Can I get an auto glass guy to fix it?

#2. I guess the wrap was too tight, and the supports for my canvas pulled out, I will have to fill in and put new screws, what do I use to do this? Other than that, everything looks good.

Damn that sucks!!!
Dad had that happen on his new 390EC way back when and the reason thought was the glass was cut too large and when it expanded in the sun it hit the frame and shattered.
For the support that ripped out no biggie. I told our shrinkwrap guy to leave the frames up last year for more room under the wrap. Well I got what I asked for when one ripped out on the aft Bimini. Frank W. recommended some type of repair paste (maybe marinetex?) and I used it to fill the holes. Let it dry for a week or so and then redrilled the holes and remounted the support.
The windshield should be handled by someone familiar with boats.
Don't sweat it and get ready for summer.

Nasty surprise, hate to see that. Hopefully the repairs won't keep you off the water long.

Sorry to hear your surprise. I replaced a center hinged, walk thru center glass on my prev searay but having a my local glass shop measure and make a template. From there he ordered a custom made and sized tempered glass that fit like a charm. Well over a thousand dollars cheaper that what MarineMax wanted. If that happened on my current boat, similar glass and all to your's, I would have him come out and do it again for me. They are very proud of their glass at the dealerships, etc.... Good luck.

That's too bad - I feel for you.

Not the only way to do it - but it would be my preferred way, as well. If you have a store that carries PC-11, it's the same stuff but mixes easier (and stores better, too).

By the way, did you support the canvas poles with a length of 2x3? Just curious if you did that and still had the problem as that's what we do. Haven't had a problem, yet - but there's a first time for everything, I suppose.

If you are going to quote me, please find the post so the reader gets the right message.......

Never fix a hole that a screw pulled out if with "paste" or putty. It is a filler only and has no tensile strength. I did post a suggestion for a repair that was completely covered by whatever screwed on top of it involving West Systems epoxy, but I never suggested paste.

As for the windshield, I'm afraid I see a curve in the broken glass. If that is the case, you have going to be stuck with going back to the OEM vendor for Sea Ray which I believe is Taylor-Made........and take a seat before you ask about prices for curved glass.

Take a seat before you are quoted for anything from Taylor made. Sliding glass door for a 46 maxum...... 24,000 dollars. Yes the comma is in the right place. Venturi windshield for a 355 carver.....5400.00.

Sorry Frank........ I shoulda said peanut butter not paste!! :smt021:lol:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the hole is large enough to need a backing, take a small piece of fiberglass cloth, saturate it with West Systems, then ram it thru the hole with a pair of needle nose pliers or forceps, then pull it back enough to hang in the hole. After it cures, sand off the surface and fill what is left of the hole with West Systems thickened with 407 or 410 filler.

If the hole is just a pulled out screw, then use Regular West Systems 105/205 epoxy thickened with 410 filler to the consistency of smooth peanut butter. 105 needs about a day to reach full strength. West Systems makes a mess that is hard to clean up so mask off around the screw hole or mounting bracket and use an old credit card to force the epoxy into the hole.

At any rate the stuff I used was the consistency of smooth paste (or peanut butter) and was worked into the hole with a toothpick trying to not get any air holes in there.

It's A Bummer ,I had that happen on my 87 weekender we were up at the cove marina in Canada , heard a pop in the
middle of the night , I just had put A new camper top on ,
must stressed the frame on mine I have heard of A few searays windows breaking for no reason

No joke, the Taylor made replacement quoted cost for my previous boat's small hinged center glass was I kid you not, Like $1,800.00. Have not found my original quote or replacement invoice yet, but I had it replaced good as new, tempered glass, installed in my frame I took the shop for right around $100. Can you say mark up !!!

Definitely go with the aftermarket glass from a good glass shop.

Alternatively, they make this stuff that comes in a little bottle, you just wipe a little on your eyeglass lenses, and it makes the scratches go away like magic! Might try some of that......

Latest update, I am floored by this email from my boat yard.

"I have not forgotten about the windshield. I called the local Sea Ray dealer and found that it was going to cost about $8500.00 for the new section from them. Needless to say I’m checking other sources. The issue with that, this piece is slightly curved. This means that to replace it, a mold has to be made from which the glass, acrylic or lexan can be made to. This add significantly to the cost. "

Any suggestions?

I have a suggestion, it has two options if it was me: a) and b)

a) insurance claim & get from Sea Ray.

b) like i suggested in an earlier post, custom made glass from local glass shop made from the existing frame. All they do is make a template from the frame and order the glass and have it tempered...

Either way, best of luck....

$8,500? Wow!

Really, this is crazy high but understand it.

In my opinion the opportunity exists for a entrepreneur to start a business that makes some sort of custom plastic alternative that would be less than perfect but good enough.
