I wanted to have breakfast on the boat this morning and took a short ride. I was out for about 5-8 minutes and noticed one of my motors was running slightly rough. When I got back to my slip I raised the hatch to take a look and saw something had been leaking. I could not see where it was coming from, but it felt like oil, and looked like oil when mixed with water and noticed it on the lower hose in the second picture. When I pulled the dip stick, the oil on the dip stick looks like what you see in the picture of the floor. Milky light brown in color. I assume water has gotten into the oil.

The motor has oil pressure and was not over heating. However, I assume the only way to have water in the oil is a bad head gasket. Any suggestions where to start. photo1.jpgphoto2.jpg

pull the therm housing to see if the floor of the intake manifold has a hole thru it

Pressure test the block.

Put air to the green arrow hose, block the red X hoses.

Pulled the elbows off and think this could be the culprit. I'm guessing they should only show exhaust markings and not rust?
Should they be this rusty inside?

Time to replace those log style with the newer center rise style and there should be no rust. the inside should only be passing dry exaust gasses.

Is it likely this is why my oil looked like Nestles Quick? Also any suggestions on best place to purchase replacements for what I have, or the ones your suggesting.

Thanks.

That engine is f*#ked. You may be able to save it but I suspect it is not worth it. After You replace the exhaust you may also find other things going wrong with that age of engine. With that oil milk shake on the floor that means the crankcase is full of water/oil mix and it puked out of the dip stick and or valve cover breather vent. I have first hand experiance with this. Do your self a favor and buy a complete drop in engine with exhaust and everything. You will be better off than trying to repair that one. New/reman eng will have a warranty also. Just make sure that if you get a reman eng that the supplier doesn't use a saltwater RWC block for the rebuild. Good luck and look on the bright side at least you didn't need a tow back to the dock.

I know sludge in the motor is not a good thing, but the motor was not ticking, knocking, or anything indicating an issue. It just happened that I opened the compartment and caught this.
Wouldn't it deem a compression and leak down test b/f going for a new motor?

I have also heard mixed reviews of Michigan Motors as well as Jasper (both big re-build places). Has anyone on here had actual experience with either of them?

find out where the water entered first. If it was running good with good gauge readings then suspect the manifolds and risers. If recently overheated then head gaskets.
Will pm a cell

It may have cracked head or bad intake manifold or just the exhaust or all of the above. Is this a saltwater RWC engine? If so DON'T put any money in this engine.

It's been very hard to stay on this project. However I wanted to provide an update.

I was able to drain (pump out) the oil and re-fill with fresh oil. Than I ran the motor with the risers off and saw it was still filling up with water. I took the head off and sent it out to a machine shop. They found a crack in it. I suspect that was the issue. I went ahead and got new manafolds (Barr) and risers and got most of it back together. I have not been able to do any work on it the last rwo weeks and hope to be able to finish this up this coming weeked.

I did not get a new intake manafold and am wondering if that was a mistake. I will keep everyone posted...

Yea pressure testing the bloc before taking off this and that, would be too much work, then you would know exactly where it was, or in 2 places.

Why listen to me, what do i know ?

Everything is back together and I was able to take the boat out for about an hour. She ran fine, oil presure was good, temp's were normal and oil is staying clean. I hope to get her out again this week.
