Only Runs If I Pump The Throttle. **UPDATE**

I am in the process of getting my boat in the water and I am running into a problem with my port engine. I can pump the gas a couple of times and the engine will fire right up idle for a second and quit. I can pump it up again and re start engine and as long as Im pumping the gas the engine will continue to run,but not well. I can see the fuel spraying into the carb from the accelerator pump when I pump the gas so I know fuel is getting to the carb, but just not enough to keep her running. Could this be a fuel pressure problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

You could check your filters, but it sounds like you are getting gas.
Could it be an ignition problem?
My starboard engine was driving me crazy early in the season. I too thought it was a fuel problem at first, but after a lot of stalling and some diagnosis it turned out that my ignition contol module was no good. It would start the motor, but stall it out a short time later. If I let it cool down it would start again, but then stall.
I initially didn't look at the ICM because many people told me that they either work or they don't and that intermittent problems with them were prctically impossible. Well, mine was the rare exception.
I would check the filters first, and if they are good I would troubleshoost all the components in the ignition system. The good news is that if you suspect a problem with a particular ignition omponent you can swap it out to the other motor to see if the problems moves there before you buy a replacement.

Just a WAG, but it smells like you may have a vacuum leak. Though it could certainly be a fuel flow problem too. As far as the engine running while you are pumping the throttle, it sounds like the accelerator pump on the carburetor is injecting the gas into the carb and keeping the engine running.

Sounds like a clogged up carb to me. The accelerator pump is working, but no fuel is getting through your idle or main jets to keep it running. I'd pull the carb and rebuild. It's pretty easy.

Idle circuits in the carb are plugged. Needs a good clean up. Yes, it is easy.
You could try removing the idle mixture screws and then start her up, then put the screws back in. You may just suck the crap out. Good for a quick fix.

Definitely worth taking the carb off and cleaning it well. What kind of carb is on there? Check to see if you have a filter at the fuel line connection into the carb - may be partially blocked. I'd recommend eye protection for this..... empty the fuel from the carb, Spray carb cleaner into the jets, into the fuel line connection and let it sit for a bit. I use a bit of compressed air to then spray out the debris. Only takes a few minutes and is certainly something to try before you do the rebuild.

btw - you're in Hampton which isn't too far from me. We like to boat up to the Elizabeth River and hit the Dismal Swamp, the bay and the Riverwalk area. Fun area.

Well I took the carb home and tore it apart and looky what I found.

This explains allot.I rebuilt the carb and she runs perfect...

Wow...I am amazed it ran at all!

That is text book classic for dried out old gas in the carburetor!!!

Pretty good Macro Photography also...:smt038

WOW. That thing has been left many winters with untreated gas in the carbs.
