Factory Gen Set, 88 Weekender. Onan 4k. Crumbled in my hands. From what I read, Very common replacement part.
I read somewhere, that people have fabricated their own version. Anyone else hear of such a rumor?

Anyone know of a good source for a replacement?
Jim

So I was thinking of making my own. (For a lot less than the $140.00 + I was quoted).
The principal seems easy enough.
Any thoughts?

If you can find an old junk jet ski, you can use the muffler off that and it makes it quieter than the water injection types. My best friend installed a standard Honda EVU genny in his boat (because of the limited space) and used a jet ski muffler on his, and is is much quieter than my gen set. Just my 2 cents...He mounted the generator under is seat on his 24' cuddy. Not too pretty but it works well and is quiet.

What a clever idea. I used to restore jstski's. I probably have one from a Tigershark, laying around somewhere.

Your friend is an idiot.

Why is he an idiot? He is a certified Cobalt tech, he put the generator in a compartment under his seat in a 24' cuddy cabin. He doesn't use it to run the a/c or anything, just to charge his house batteries and maybe run some lights when he is in the cove...The USCG approved it when they gave his boat a safety certificate...

First off... the USCG did not "approve it" by having the USCG AUXILIARY doing a checklist of safety items on a boat. The safety check they do is not a review of the dumb a$$ mods people do on their boats. And this is right up there at the top of idiotic mods...

He'll be lucky if he doesn't kill some people with that setup...

Hang in there Sonny! You are just the new kid on the block! Some just don't understand the "redneck" solutions that some of us have.......

BTW Welcome....

I had the same genny and the crank broke on it. You can call a Cummin dealer and get the part (have your genny info ready).

it's only $140 dollars for God's sake! Buy the darned part, screw it in and go boating. If you must wrap your own at least use the same metal for it all.

I think you can get all the stuff at home depot.

so... after all that, The stainless elbow with the brass nipple idea looks Ok or not? The brass nipple is from the original fitting. It seems to me to be bettter than the cast iron/brass combination they used originally. After all, I did crumble in my hands. I have never had an 1-1/4 stainless elbow crumble. It goes from there into the muffler system so nioise isn't a issue.
