Trying to narrow down an oil leak....
Alarm came on yesterday when I was letting the engines warm up....checked the guages...zero oil pressure port engine....shut it down, pulled the stick out...confirmed...no oil on stick...added 2 qts.....showing 1/2 qt low now....restarted the engine....pressure back to normal....cool.....Headed out for an afternoon on the water......doing well for about an hour....low speed approx 10 - 12 knts......and noticed again....oil pressure going down slightly.....turned around and headed back in.....got back to the dock...secured....checked the oil level again....nothing on the stick......waited till she cooled down......filled the engine to the mark with fresh oil.......this morning....checked again....it's all in the bilge....not the engine..........
question is....aside from the pan....where else could it be leaking from.....keeping in mind....since adding oil...the engine has NOT been started.....
If I haven't missed anything...the pan should be the only sorce of a leak....
How say you ??
Thanks in advance
Pete

If all the oil's draining from the block- when NOT under pressure (engine not run), it has to be from the pan- there's no other possibility. That's where it all lies until the oil pump does it's thing.

Do you have a remote oil fill/drain hose from a fitting on the pan drain?

Mine leaked at the remote oil filter line, had to have one made. very hard to reach, he had to cut down a wrench and install blind

Thanks for the confirmation guys....to blessed hot to get much done on it.....but got the bottom of the pan cleaned up....been using an inspection light and mirror for a looksee....
There is no remote fill or otherwise....all stock......drain plug to my knowledge has never been removed, as I pump it out through the dip stick opening.....sure is frustrating and 95 + degree temps and 90 % humidity aren't helping my disposition at all...
Thanks for the replies though.....I had hoped my thoughts were confirmed.....will let you all know what the culprit is....

Know what you mean about doing maintenance right now.
I'm over due for oil changes on the mains and genset, but at these temps (same as yours!) I've been putting it off...

I'm seriously thinking about renting one of those portable A/C units from Home Depot and working under the canvas in some degree of comfort...

with that much oil "going somewhere", your bilge should be a mess, hence the pan rusted through. I have had this happen and it is a pain since you need to remove the engines to to repair. Good luck!

Source found.....there is a "Butterfly" valve where the drain pulg should be.....type used on the radiator to drain the water....sea water hose bracket had come loose and it was chaffing against the valve.....causing it to loosen (open) feeling pretty silly now....found it at 0415 yesterday morning.....before sunrise.....as current temp here now is 101.....(1840)
About ready to join the "snowbirds"....head to NS for the summer and back to VA for the winter.....
Thanks for all the input guys....be safe...
Pete
