Oil & Gear Lube Questions Tohatsu/Merc/Nissan 6 HP

Okay with my regular boat I use all the specified oils/filters...

With the Tohatsu 6HP. The Specs are Gear Lube SAE 80 - 90.

Is that 80w90 or 80 to 90 weight. I am far from an oil viscosity expert. What do folks use in their small outboards. I don't have a Tohatsu dealer near by.

Also what is the difference between Outboard oil & Inboard oil. Can I use the same oil I use in my boat 25w40? Does it have to Outboard Oil?

Are we talking lower unit gear oil? Merc is the same as Tohotsu and Nissan, I do believe. Merc sells two gear lubes in squeezeable tubes, one regular and one high performance. The price isn't that much different. I use the HP in my 9.9 Merc and never had any problems.

I'd use the outboard oil (I do on my 6hp Merc), and the high performance gear lube...
