My 4.3L 220MPI has the remote mounted oil filter. It takes a standard 35-866340Q03 and I have about an extra 2.5 ~3" of clearance above the filter when installed.

My questions are should I use a higher quality filter over the std Merc one like a Purolator pureone PL1531 or Mobil 1 M1-111?

Better still since I have the available height should I go or a longer filter as well like the PL34631 or M1-203??

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks Mark

I'm not an expert at all. For what it's worth I have shorties on my 454's as that's all that will fit. They're 30+ years old and seem to be doing fine. Larger filter = more surface area for filtering and more volume. I don't think it makes a material difference in the long run. If you can fit it go for it. I've not heard anything bad on Merc. I believe I purchased Quick Silver from my Marina a few weeks ago. I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions on filters. Stay tuned. Perhaps make sure they're rated for marine use/ higher pressures? Boat engines run consistently at high RPM's which means increased pressures for longer duration. I don't know if you have to take that into account? Just a thought.
