My 5.0 carb had a normal oil filter on it and when changing the oil last weekend I upgraded to a high efficiency oil filter, part # 35-858004K. Got 2 off ebay for only $20 shipped, good deal. Same size, threading, etc... as the original. Only difference I noticed was stock one was flat where the oil holes going into the filter were vs the high efficiency had a slope to it. I don't have the number of the one I took off with me, but can get that if I really need to.

Any reason at all that it would be bad to use this filter over the stock one? Or i guess any reason at all why any Merc filter that fits would be bad to use over another?

How did you derive that 35-858004K was an upgrade to your previous filter? Some filters have bypass and check valves built into them for various applications....make certain your upgrade is a form-fit-function to your original. Normally "high efficiency" means it has a microglass media as the filtrate vs cellulous (aka paper). The microglass media provides a higher dirt holding capacity and a lower pressure drop on a clean element resulting in longer element life....
