Oil change on my Cat 3126's 450 DA

Or Walmart is about the same price as Amazon. You can order 5 gallon buckets sometimes too.

Anything I'm missing with this list guys?

12 Gallons Shell Rotella T SAE30
2 Cat oil filters
2 Cat fuel filters
1 Westerbeke oil filter
4 Racors (engines)
1 Racor (genset)
Oil filter wrench
2 6-gallon gas cans
Kitchen size garbage can with bags
Small trash bags
5-gallon bucket
Small bucket

  1. Run engines on load for 15 minutes.
  2. Pump out old oil into each gas can or buckets.
  3. Remove each oil filter with small trash bag.
  4. Replace with new filters and seem the gaskets with oil. Do not fill the oil filters with oil.
  5. Fill each engine with 5 gallons of oil.
  6. Check dipsticks for proper capacity. Add if necessary. Do not overfill.
  7. Replace old fuel filters with new.
  8. Pump oil out of generator. Replace oil filter. Fill with oil.
  9. Remove Racor filters from housing and let drip-dry.
  10. Replace 4 Racor filters.
  11. Replace generator Racor filter.

DJ - after you pump out the engine oil, wait about 15 mins before you pull the filters. No oil will leak out. The filters need a 5 1/2" filter wrench...

That's strange because I have the horizontal filter and never seem to leak oil when removing. I do wait until the oil is extracted before removing though.

Mine leaked some last change, I recall it always does leak a little for me....I do wait the 15 minutes tor remove it after I pump out the oil...

Just a thought. But I don't think you should be using Rotella oil at all. 3116 and 3126 require cat 30 or 40 weight oil only. Unless you like soot on the transom , low power. And pulling your aftercoolers and turbo's often. Just saying

Couldn't agree more. There are dozens if not hundreds of different brands and models of Diesel engines both in the marine and general markets. It's kind of telling to me that Cat 3116 and 3126 are the only two models that have specially formulated oil engineered just for them.

When I had the 3126'ers in my 410 DA I always and only used the Cat SAEO. The difference in the price was just not worth jumping on the Rotella bandwagon (to me anyway). Plus, I had to go to the Cat franchise to get all the filters anyway, so it was always boxed up ready and convenient for me to grab. BTW that 2000 410 is tied up in the slip next to me living and breathing like new.....

It's been well established that Rotella is fine so long as it is SAE 30 or 40, depending on operating temp.

its multi-viscosity oils that cause the issue in 3116/3126s.

Agree - this is acceptable. 800 hours on my motors with Rotella T30; had aftercoolers serviced last year with over 1000 hours on them and they were surprisingly clean. Performance nominal, no smoke, and minimal sooting. My boat is slightly over-propped however which accounts for the slight sooting.
