Hi guys,

I recently bout a 2001 Sea Ray 185. It currently has 110 hours, bout it with 80 :)

Question:

How ofter should I be changinf the oil ?

What kind of oil should I use? Brand? Weight?

What kind of Filter ? # if you know.

Does anyone have a thread that shows how to do an oil change on a 3.0 Mercruser ?

Is there anything else that I should be changing on a regular basis?

Thanks in Advance

Mercury recommends their brand which is Quicksilver for both the oil and the filter. They are fine. Most if not all name-brand oils and filters are also fine. Spring for the extra cost of a synthetic if you want some margin. I run Shell Rotella mineral oil, 20W-50, which is sold for over-the-road trucks. Because it is intended for commercial use and sold in gallon containers, it is less expensive than most oils marketed to car owners in quart containers. I mail-order the Quicksilver filters (fuel and oil).

I changed the oil on my now-sold 3.0 once per year, in the Fall, as part of winterization. I would run the boat on the lake one last time to get the new oil hot and distributed throughout the engine. I put stabilizer in the fuel, and then fogged the intake with fogging oil until the motor choked and stalled. That is the recommended procedure for getting the valves and ports coated for corrosion protection during lay-up. I got eight seasons out of that boat, pulling skiiers and taking family and friends out on the lake most Summer weekends. The engine was running great when I sold it.

Your owner's manual actually has very good information in it. If you don't have one, you can download one from Sea Ray's website (at least you used to be able to). If not, contact your local dealer.

There's plenty of threads on here about maintenance and changing oil. Please take a few minutes to search. I'd venture a bet that you'll learn a couple of other things along the way.:smt001

Basically, oil changes are once a season or every 100 hours - whichever comes first.

Please put your boat specs in your signature.
