Oil change - fall or wait until spring?

I am all set up to do the oil and filter changes. I bought the oil changing system from Jim and was ready to go. But, my mechanic told me it was best to do it in the spring. Since he will be fogging the carbs, it will get into the oil and best to do it fresh in the spring.

When do most (seasonal) boaters do theirs?

I've always done in the fall, and heard that also. You don't want all those contaminants sitting in there all winter long.

Have always done it in the fall. As stated above, I have always believed that no point in letting dirty oil sit there all winter, dirt settles out and forms sludge.

Fall - you shouldn't get that much fogging oil getting into the oil.

Does it have to be the absolute last thing before winterizing, or is it ok to put a couple of hours on after the oil change?

I was waiting to do it right before shrink wrapping her, but I have more time next week. I have one more long (about 5 hrs round trip) to make before laying her up.

I'm sure some big brains will get their slide rulers out and respond, but 5 hours on fresh oil is not going to hurt it too much (IMO).... I have always been told it's starting and stopping of the engine where the contaminates originate....?

Anyone that sez to leave dirty, contaminated oil sitting in the crankcase all winter long shouldn't be turning a wrench...seriously...
