4.5 quarts is what the crankcase of my 2003 5.0 L-MPI holds. The specs that came with the boat say 5.5 quarts. The corrected specification is documented at: https://www.mercruiserparts.com/mercruiser-gas-engine-oil-capacity with the following line:
MCM [Sterndrive] 5.0L & MPI GM 305/5.0L V-8 2002 - 2016 S/N 0M300000 and up: 4-1/2 US qt (4.25 L)
Warmed it up, pumped out 3.5 quarts, then got an additional 1/2 quart out of the bilge plug drain line. Course the old filter is a sponge usually rated at 1/2 quart. Refilled with 4.5 quarts to top of hash marks. Will go down a little on dipstick when I start and wet down inverted filter. Mercruiser returned my e-mail and I do have the correct dipstick. Another boating mystery solved!
