Hello.

I had an incident this weekend.... I was for crusing for 20minutes about 3200 rpm , when I noticed that the oil presure gauge began to drop slowly. Quickly I pulled back and stoped the engine.. As soon as I lifted the cover to the engine room it was evident that oil was in the bidge (starboard side).. I checked and determined that oil came from the top of the dip stick as all componets below the dip stick were with engine oil.. I started the engine and ran for 5 minutes in neutral with no problem... slowly increased RPMs (engine in gear) and the oil presure came back to normal, just under 40PSI... Ran the rest of the day with no problem and no more oil out of the dip stick!!

Engine oil level was a bit low but it keeped...

I was told that it may have been the PCV valve that became stuck???

Any ideas????????

Alex

Having the PCV stuck could explain it - your top end would become pressurized and the engine will try to vent the pressure. It's certainly an easy item to replace.

I think mine is due for replacing too. My Oil pressure is dipping as I come off throttle, and that's what I believe it is. I don't have oil spewing yet, so I'll want to change it soon so I don't, but that does sound like a similar thing you're experiencing.

lower rpm's and lower oil pressure are related and perfectly normal, especially at elevated oil temps.

I agree with this Todd... my previous 5.0 MPI and both my 4.3 MPI's both have less oil pressure as I back off the throttles. My Duramax does as well.... pretty normal. Once you are at running oil temp that is.

Mercruisers are not equipped with PCV systems.

Huh?

Here is a link (http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=77406F) to the PCV valve for the Alex's engine 5.0 EFI Merc Part Number 21-861476.

Merc Part Number 802748 is the PCV valve for the 7.4 MPI.

Merc has the new parts finder where you can dump in your engine serial # ... and it will give you diagrams and part numbers as well.

If the cause was the PCV... they can usually be cleaned (and should be cleaned regularly with your annual maint per the service manual). They are only $5 if you wanted to simply replace the unit. Good luck I hope this resolves the issue.

This happened to me on a 454-V8 2 years ago. I did have PCV valves and replaced them but the problem persisted.

In my case (and forgive my lack of details) pressure was being built up in the oil pan and the only place for it to go was up the dipstick tube. I had a fairly steady drip landing on the carpet under the tube.

I sold the boat shortly after. I disclosed the problem to the new owner at Sea Trial and he was not concerned. Two months later he contacted me and said the motor had blown.

There was no significant drop in engine performance that I could tell while this was happening. I had only had the boat for a few months.

Some are, some are not. It's been hashed out here before. Ours do not have the balls in them.

Guess I'm not as up on things as I thought I was...

I know this doesn't apply to the motor mentioned but the 4.3MPI's are internal and cannot be changed as indicated in the manual.
