Ok, spent the weekend on the boat. I loaded about 5 movies on my 8gig iPhone and bought the A/V cable to hookup to the stock TV/VCR. Cable has about a 3' reach and the iPhone acted pretty much like a tethered remote (not so bad in the v-berth of a 280). my ripped DVD's on the iPhone looked great (tv is only 7" so not difficult).

What I also did before I headed out was install a freeware program called "iPhone remote" on my mac at home. I have about 25 movies on this computer and I also installed IPmenu which sends an email when your ip address changes. with this setup, I was able to access my mac at home and browse any and all files as well as access all my movies on my home computer. I was able to watch all of the movies on my tv via iphone over the edge network, as well as any video on the web that was iPhone compatible (this included youtube videos). The A/V cable also has a USB leg that you can use to either hook up to a laptop or use a 12v to USB charger. If you can watch a video on the iPhone, it will output it through the A/V cable to the TV.

we spent the night watching "Das Boot" on the tv via the iphone over the edge network from my computer at home where the movie was stored. worked great, looked great.

I am using handbrake to rip all of my DVD's onto my computer to watch on the boat tv via my iPhone over the edge network. I can also access and control my itunes on my computer at home and have my whole music library play over the edge network on my boat.

all I can say is it worked great, looked great, and I had access to both my video and audio libraries on my boat.

I'm surprised the video quality was acceptable. I thought when movies were put on an iPhone/iPod, the resolution was cut way back... No?

If you stop being so cheap and go spend 200 bucks on an AppleTV, you can sync it with your iTunes stuff and hook it up permanently to your TV and have good resolution. I think you can have up to 5 AppleTV's sync with an iTunes account.

The iphone will deliver the same resolution as the appleTV (a compressed HD signal if you have the HD cable, or SD via the SD cable).

I am cheap and this freakin iPhone is now a part of my everyday life, so if I can make everything work with one device... I'm happy. What my iPhone can do that the appleTV can't do is access videos without a wifi signal. It sinks with my iTunes so I can have all my music and videos native on the phone at the same resolution, but it also allows me to access any and videos on the internet even if I don't have a wifi signal as long as I have a cell signal.

so in a way it's like an appleTV, laptop, and phone all rolled into one.

AT&T is going to love you, Mike. How much network bandwidth are you using?

Best regards,
Frank

P.S.

It's only $600. It's on a decreasing scale. And the checks are in the mail. (or direct deposit.) Don't spend it all in one place.

Cupcake has been quiet.

Too quiet.

Scary...

I have no idea what kind of bandwidth i'm using but I don't really care as my contract states unlimited access for $20/month.

I do have to state that the edge network is slow to start the video, but once it's going, it kept up fine.

now I just have to write a script that will suck the recorded content from my DVR, compress it via handbrake and allow me access via my iPhone.

Once the SDK comes out, I should be able to setup an ichat, feed live TV to the ichat and access it via the iphone and watch in on the TV.

Ok, I admit I'm a little bit of a techno geek, but it's fun when it works.

Wow, and I thought boating was a way to get away from all that geek, hi tech crap...I mean stuff. I have an iphone, MAC, 4-5 computers all that stuff but my idea of a good day or night on the boat is, leave iphone in storage cabinet incase of emergency, have a couple of drinks, hang out and get to know the admiral again, not your iphone.

But to each his own....

Its a big boat thing.... you wouldnt understand

Think week and month long cruises, Fishing with the guys with the game on.....

Personally I will be adding Sat TV so I can park just off the Nationals Stadium in the Anacostia, watch the game & 'tailgate' party on the water.
