Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

Hi All,

This weekend I found my strb engine primer pumps leak when pressed. Engine seems to run fine. 2 questions: Is this manual primer pump needed for normal engine operations? Are these rebuildable? SBMar wants $400 for a new one. Any other comments/advise?

Thanks for any info.

Larry

AWESOME!!.....Thanks!

Will the engine run normally with the one i have? It only leaks when plunged?

I changed the on-engine fuel filter. I do pre-fill that filter <from the outside ring>, install, then a few pumps usually will start the engine w/o issue. This time when I pumped, it leaked fuel.

Perfect….. that’s good, so is Racors and injectors…… no reason to pump if system isn’t touched between trips

I’m doing racors and fuel filters this week…always a fun job

My Cummins parts guy said they didn’t have these filters in stock. Which surprised me but I was in a hurry so didn’t ask why.
Is everyone with mechanicals still using these. I took a pic to make sure I had the right number.

I tried ordering those online but they said several week’s delivery, local Cummins dealer found two in the state of Washington and had them for me in a couple days.
Don’t now way there is such a shortage of Fleetguard filters

Cummins called me today and said they got 2 in. I pick them up tomorrow and will ask what’s going on

I've been buying my Fleetguard filters from Oil Filter Service (oilfilterservice.com). Typically buy five of each filter at a time.
I looked up that number and they have them for $16.62 each.

jeez, last year at this time I couldn’t find oil filters for my truck, now there’s all kinds of them. What’s this? The next wave of “we’ll get you out of your fuel burning diesels if it’s the last thing we do”?

That price is a bit high. I just picked them up at a Cummins store for $32 for two and they charged me $12 for overnight freight that was included in that price.
Oilfilterservice.com wants $60.20 for a Lf9009 oil filter. I paid $75 for 2 delivered on eBay yesterday. …what can I say… I’m cheap… it’s the only way I can afford this stupid hobby:)

All good - just wanted to give you options on availability.

You're comparing apples to oranges when comparing 420/44DAs to 420/44DBs. DBs are much heavier with lot's more wind resistance. Historically, DAs were always a bit faster and a bit more efficient.

…except you have to look at model years. The newer DA’s (mid 2000s) started coming with hard tops. That’s a lot of fiberglass and their dry weights come in much closer to DB’s than the soft tops. A friend recently got a 44DA hard top and it’s very close to the same weight as my 400DB. Same engines: 450 Diamonds.

Would you mind sharing the weight numbers?

44DA with a hard top and 450Cs....that's new to me. Didn't SR made the model switch from 420 DAs and DBs to 44s and upgraded the engines to QSC500s in 2006?

Mine dry is 22,500 lbs

Is this actual or from the specs doc?

This is why I said we're comparing apples and oranges. Few years ago I checked the weight of mine and it was 40K. And this was about 75-80% of what I call fully loaded. The yard guys swore that the scale on the travel lift was accurate.

Specs doc….I guess you don’t know if it includes options like the hardtop back then or diesels for that matter
