Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

I notice mine fluctuate during the year too. That’s the great thing about Aetna tachs, you always know for sure. (I think you run those too)
I have 2 sets of sea ray analog tachs in storage to prove the hours if need be, otherwise, they are worthless.

oh yea, the aetnas might be the best upgrade available. I put them in the weekend we bought the boat. EGT and boost are a close second in my opinion

On two occasions now my port engine just clicked. Both times I go to the back of the motor by the control box. press in the circuit breakers. they aren't tripped. but the boat will then start. is that the symptom for the relay is going.

Sometimes I push the the start button to the start position and it just clicks. I release the button then push again and it starts. Is that the same think yours is doing?

Just a solid click. when I try it again same results. I use the emergency start but it doesn't change anything

Could be an issue with the start switch? They are OFF ON (ON) maybe an issue with that momentary portion of the switch?

+1. I have been thinking that might be it. Intermittent problem right now for me. Too many other things that need attention. I am interested in hearing what ur fix is.

Pull the switch panel, and swap the start switches to see if problem follows. If so, buy 2 new switch bodies and swap them out. It’s probably a 45 minute job.

Engine dies then won't restart.
Only ten minutes after refueling started to go on plane, on engine sync, engines got to about 2500 rpm then suddenly felt like we were dragging something, pulled throttles back and shifted to neutral. In panic I may have shifted too quickly out of grear. Also believe I shut off both engines. It happened so quickly we will never know. Anyway the port engine started right up. Starboard cranked quickly but would not restart. Got back to slip and:
Switched supply tanks
Changed racor fuel selection
Replace run relay in box top of engine.
Still cranks but no start.
Any suggestions most appreciated!

any stumble or signs of it trying to fire? Maybe you somehow have air in there. I’d pump the primer a bunch and listen for fuel returning to the tank to be sure it’s all clear of air.

also I think you’re ok having pulled out of gear early, it’s the shift back into forward at high RPMs that does the real damage as the plates heat up and warp.

No sign of stumble. Turns over normally but never fires up. Wondering if its the fuel selinoid that shuts down the engine?
^^^This^^^

You should here the solenoid "clunk" when star button to the run position.

Do you here this?

I think I understand but we are set up with press to start then release switch. Don't have a real start run switch. Have a nearby mechanic to look at it tomorrow am. My selenoid has only two terminals not three like my cat manuel shows. How is it tested with a multimeter and diagnosed? Any temporary work around if either the run side or stop side is out?

When you go from the OFF position to the ON/RUN (middle position of the switch) you should hear a definite solid "clunk" The next position is the start position the momentary position to start.

My money is on the fuel solenoid

Where can I get a pair of fuel supply hoses made? Unfortunately, when the starboard Caterpillar 3116 engine was rebuilt, they removed the two hoses shown in the picture (port engine shown) and lost them.

The one hose is shown with an orange trace and the other yellow.

Any hydraulic hose shop can make them up.

Yea, Tom is right, again,... just change the zip code and scroll to the map.
