Official 390DA Thread

I’m a little nervous, had the 8.1’s in the 340 and they were plenty of power, I assumed the qsb 380s would be plenty in this boat but I’m reading some mixed reviews on here

Plenty of power, 2005 390 with 380 QSB. Still running the original props 21 x 23 and get 3,000 rpm.
Usually run at 25-26 depending on conditions.

I think the 380 QSBs provide very adequate power for this boat hull and displacement weight. It is not underpowered...and is a very reliable, easy-to-maintain engine set-up. That said, the 380 set-up is never going to provide you with anything close to a thrilling/invigorating ride either.. don't go into this boat/engine package with that expectation.

My 340 was a faster boat. However, I was burring close to 36 to 38 GPH and going 25 knots. Now I am cruising at 21 knots (2,475 to 2,525 RPM target is 80% load) and burring 28 to 30 GPH. Also this boat is much less impacted by the wake of other boats, and given the increased size of the props and tq from diesel, the boat is much easier to handle around the dock.

This boat will be slower than your 340, but I do not think the boat is under powered. It is longer, wider, deeper, and heavier. It is a much better handling boat in every way (IMHO).

Ok really glad to hear, to be honest though I ran my 34 at under 3400rpms 99% of the time so I wasn’t moving very fast, low 20’s mph usually like seeing 3350 on the digital rpm gauge. Never saw the need to push it

Ok got a question, we got the tv in the main salon to come down, how does it go back up? The button behind the couch is just a momentary switch, I would think it should be a toggle?

You'll love the 390! Cummins engines are great. Very reliable and rock steady in any sea conditions. Just take good care of them with preventative maintenance and run them around 80% load on a regular basis. The 390 is a great all around boat.

Thanks so much looking forward to getting her home

survey went pretty well. we were 100rpms low at wot. couple other things on the punch list also

does anyone know of a writeup for how to change transmission fluid? and is there a filter that gets changed as well?

Prior to bringing the boat up last year I had a vibration from a loose motor mount found in the sea trial which also created a minor shaft seal leak. So I had both seals replaced and had the props inspected which were within spec. Finally had new plugs and wires installed early in the summer and didn't notice much vibration after all that maintenance.

Based on riding on a friends 390 with base gas engines, i think with the props reconditioned, which was time (and part of my OCD), we're pretty close to or slightly better than his. Glad we had things baselined tho, affords me to know what we have.
