Official 380 Thread

Congrats on your new purchase!

I believe that I received every original piece of documentation that came with my 380. In fact, it was all in a "Sea Ray" case and included all the electronics manuals and even an instructional VHS tape. The actual owner's manual is somewhat generic other than certain recommendations based on equipment, however, I do refer to it often.

I'm surprised that you can't buy one for a 2001 on line. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll copy mine and send it.

Michael.

I will call Sea Ray tomorrow and see if they have an owners manual available. Thanks for the offer Micheal.

Hi,

I'm a new owner to a 2000 380 Sundancer. We bought her last June and have been very happy so far. When I get a chance I will post pictures.

The only electronic device I didn't like was the r80 chart plotter. The track ball was difficult to use and the screen difficult to see at times (CRT). Rather than upgrade everything, I opted to buy a Raymarine RL80C chart plotter. Installed this last week and it looks great. My only concern is the autopilot... I can't seem to get it calibrated.

Only 9 days until Spring... just thought I'd introduce myself.

Michael.

I am also a new owner to a 2000 380. bought her in Aug 2011. I've got the same issue with the RL80.
I've been watching RL80C on EBay. May I ask where you found yours & approx. price. Yes we too are looking from warm weather & calm seas.

I own a 2002 380 DA and would like to hear if anyone has any experience with coastal cruising up and down the west coast. I have not had her out of the SF bay yet and would like to hear what I should expect.

We may be too far north for you but is you plan on going north of Vanvouver. We also go from Vanvouver to Olyimpia Washington every fall.
We have been from Vancouver to Alaska. The trip is not difficult if you watch the weather and fuel up when you can. There are three areas of big wind. Johnstone Strait, Central Coast and last from Prince Rupert to Alaska. If you leave early on low wind forcast days you should be OK. Lots of place to get groceries and do laundry. Try to finish north of Vancouver Island by the first of August as it gets foggy. Expect rain and cool weather. Lots of places to anchor.
PM me if you want more details.

Thanks, but to start we probably not be that far north. I would like to take baby steps first. But we will, we have family on Port Hadlock. Just wanted some input on how the boat handled and when should we make for a marinia when it gets rough. How rough?

I got mine on eBay after unsuccessfully bidding on a previous one (sniped in last 5 seconds). I've already installed it and it's much better than the R80. Based on my limited experience looking for these I'd say a good one is worth between $750-$800.

If you want my old R80 I'll sell it cheap;>)

We like smooth water. In the open you get rollers. They do not seem to effect you but when the tops start to blow off them we look for a place to anchor or moor. If rollers are more than 6 feet we do not go. 3 foot waves are no problem still sort of smooth after that we find it rough.

Has anyone installed a flat screen in the cabin to left of the stairs ( looking aft)..? I think a 24" would fit and could be mounted with a ceiling mount (mounted to what is the underside of the helm).
this would free up the area above the fridge for storage or the Admiral is suggesting a wine cooler.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

I was thinking the same thing. Have to get rid of that old tube and the space would be useful.

Haul out time this week....time to inspect the side I never see....hull, shafts, props, rudders and have her bottom painted. Going to add LED under water lights as well.

Hi again,

I have my props out at Hale to map/recondition. I can't remember the actual spec on these, but I think stock for the 454 Mag MPI is 21 x 22 x 1.5. My question is, has anyone had any success with a greater pitch? I'm thinking 21 x 24? My understanding is this will sacrifice torque for cruising speed. The boat has no trouble getting out of the water fully loaded now, and I like the idea of getting across Long Island Sound a little faster at 3,500 RPMs.

Thanks.

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone else has had any stress crack problems with the arch of the hardtop. Mine seem to come from around the speakers installed on the inside of the arch. Its happened on both sides. I've noticed the 40's have big support braces in the helm area supporting their larger hardtop. Any ideas or info?

Has anyone removed the Norcold refrigerator from the salon? What is involved? Remove the gangway door? Does the refrigerator need to be take apart? I guess I am going to replace it with the Norcold replacement DE -0041

I too am in need of a new fridge. My reapair guy is telling me it's going to be quite an undertaking. Stairs, and the door need to be removed. The issue he is having though is with the replacement unit itself. cant find the right size etc. Should be quite a ride. I'll bet it's $2k before you know it. Thats some racket these fridge guys got going. Cant recharge???? What the heck is that?

You can replace the compressor and related guts of the fridge for around $700 if memory serves me correct. It's been a few years since I did it and I've posted the link here a few different times. You can do it in the salon and don't need to dismantle things to get the fridge out.

*edit - here's one discussion

Completed the cabin mod, installing a TV above the aft cabin step-down using a small ceiling mount and modifying the space above the fridge to a cabinet with a pull out wire basket (as requested by the Admiral). For a door, I mounted a nautical themed framed picture on a piano hinge.

Running TV cables to new TV site was most difficult part of job. Limitations on the slide out rack/basket are in place due to the depth of the cabinet space.
I keep my satellite receiver in there as well, so I had limited width as well.

Thank you. They dont make the kits anymore however. Again, what a racket. My boat house manager ordered a Norcold replacement. I know I know, but this whole ordeal has been a giant headache. I have been trying to get someone to replace it since last year. Looks like its gonna happen now and the Norcold is the best option. The fridge was $1,300. The jury is still out on the labor.

Thanks again,
Bob

Sounds good. Where are you going to mount the lights? What type of lights are you considering? My boat is out for the winter and I would love to add underwater lights but dont want to drill into my hull just to add lights.
