Official 380 Thread

Hello Rob.
My name is Ron and I have the exact same boat with the same issue. Did you ever figure out how to fix it?
Ron
Hi Ron,

I have not been able to fix this issue and I spoke to my mechanic last week about it. He said he has 2 other customers in our marina having the issue with their 8.1’s and has spoken to Mercury multiple times and has changed out multiple parts with no success. While it’s annoying my motors run fine when cruising and I ran over 7 hours on Saturday with no issues. I think Chris is most probably correct in checking the grounds.

Mine was intermittent at beginning of season and by the end of last summer it was doing it dock side and underway. Can you please explain what you did to fix. I have been loosing my mind over this issue. So you disconnected and cleaned all ground wires in the Bilge? I know there is a bus bar attached to the rear of the transom and then grounds are marked and go to each engine. I have a 2006 38 with smart craft. Not sure if you have the same.

On my 7.4 blocks, and I am pretty sure most marine engines there is a common ground stud. The stud on mine is near the starter. Has all kinds of sized wires smashed under one nut. It’s a simple thing to double check. Mine was maybe a 1/4 turn loose iirc… but I pulled them all off, put a star washer on first, then ring terminal (with no-ox), repeat star washer then next ring terminal (with no-ox)….

Also, has anyone replaced their cockpit table with something wooden? I am not interested in spending $2k to have some of the custom made teak companies build one. I am lookin online and thinking about building one as well. Honestly, I think the stock plastic one is a little too big for what we need. I also want to have some cup holders built in. I found this online for about around $250 for the top alone and around $400 for the top with a new pedestal. It might even be too small at 24" x 16" but I think it looks good. Once we replace the upholstery next month, I'll want to update the table for sure.
I would like to inquire as to where you found that table ? It is certainly looks beautiful. I have a 370 DA

Yes, it's a water heater. Look up your model, and get the part(s)

Sam did you ever figure out your issue with the single beep and gauge reset?
Ron
I found on another thread the same thing my boat was doing. The other post said to set your engine switch to run (but don't start) and listen to the fuel pump. If the pump runs and shuts off, it's ok. If it continually runs, your engine cpu needs to be repaired. I checked with Whipple and they do cpu fixes for around $650. I believe this is the source of the single beep and (sometimes) stall.

Hi folks, question related to hot water.....

Our last boat, different make, had a brand new hot water tank, but the same "cube" style tank that is found on the 380s. We could leave the dock, make a short trip and the hot water in the tank would stay hot-ish for at least 2 days without running the generator.

We took out our 2001 380 for the first time a few days ago, got off of shore power around 5pm, by morning, the water in the tank was lukewarm at best, barely hot enough to wash dishes.

I'm wondering if that's what everyone else experiences. Hard to imagine that companies are putting in insulation in the new tanks that is that much better than years 20 years ago, but you never know.

Thx, dave

Your old boat probably had the cooling loop for raw water ran through the water heater that would also heat the water. The 380 water heater is in the salon under the couch, so most do not have that feature. It’s made for it, but typically isn’t hooked up. I believe that’s more of the issue than the water just cooling down

Thanks Chris,
Yep, agreed, the other one did have that and this one doesn't. I guess I'm a little surprised that this one cools down that much faster compared to my last one.

Followup, has anyone been able to replace the stock water heater with a larger one?

Too confined, the factory location is barely big enough to fit this one IMO

You would have to relocate it or eliminate the couch.

Back to your original Q-Maybe it cools down faster because it’s not in the engine room with a higher ambient temperature? Just a guess…

Thanks Chris,

Hi everyone. My CO2 detector reached its end of life and need to replace it but it is discontinued and I can't find a replacement. I have the fireboy 18236 xintex. What have everyone done for a replacement? Ideally hopefully one that would use the same wiring. 2001 380 DA

I just ordered a replacement for my CMD-4M-RLY directly from Xintex. 616-735-9380. Both their customer service and technical support were great. They no longer make this model, so you will need to upgrade to their newest model CMD5. I haven’t received it yet, so I’ll have to let you know how it goes.

Just took out the boat for the 1st time last weekend. It seemed that the steering wasn't 'as responsive' as before. It seemed to take significantly more turns of the wheel to get the boat to come around than before. Anyone ever experience anything like this before?

Thank you. Please do let us know how did it go and if install matched the wires etc. TY

I would suggest checking your steering fluid level. If full, bleed the system.

Got the cockpit (forgot to take a pic), the galley, and rear stateroom tv's installed this week. The rear stateroom is 19" and a nice little fit for the limited space back there. stateroom tv.pdf.jpg galley tv.pdf.jpg
