Working on installing a bypass on the water heater. This past spring, about a week or 2 after commissioning for the season the outlet water hose from my heater came loose. After that, it seemed like the fitting was worn out from 20 years of disconnecting and reconnecting to bypass... replaced the fitting, good to go now....

so now I am adding the bypass like I had on my campers... the only question is what to do with the cold feeding the mixing valve.... pretty comfortable there is a check valve in the mixing valve so that water will not back fill into the water heater.... thinking I blow out the system with the water heater bypassed. The. With the cold to the water heater still closed, Close the bypass, and open the hot leaving the water heater. This will feed the air through the mixing valve and back through the hot to get that last little bit of water out....

I have no idea how the mixing valve functions, but when the previous owners winterized, it appears they just tied the in and out together, not accounting for the T feeding the mixing valve....

Here is a pic of the bypass so far....View attachment 93391

I didn't build a bypass system like you did, which is a great idea that I probably should do, but I just use a 15MM plug in the cold to mixing valve when I disconnect it. I also just remove the cold and hot and connect them together after blowing out the hot water heater. Since you already built the bypass system why don't you just put another one of the valves you used on the bypass on the mixing valve cold feed? That should work, right?

What is the reasoning n for the bypass?

So the water heater can be left empty for the winter, and to not have to fill it with antifreeze.
Well, I guess I better do the same!! I am a new Sea Ray owner. I also have a bilge heater. I live in North Alabama. It doesn’t get too cold, but still does Freeze from time to time.

Just for winterizing. The normal s to disconnect the hot and cold and put together, so you don’t have to fill the WH with antifreeze....

It’s a convenience more than anything...

Good deal. Thank you very much!!

If you do get to it would you mind posting some pictures on how you got to it and what the conduits look like it would be greatly appreciated!! Having my 1995 370 for about a year I have always been curious how to get from the helm to where the radio and old TV are mounted in the salon.

Here is how mine looked, done in 20 minutes, thx all.

Has anyone replaced a transmission yet? Curious what the pricing is.

Thanks,
Vince

Yes I replaced a transmission earlier this year. Boat has to come out because the shaft has to be slid back through the V-Drive. If you have the ZF’s you shouldn’t have any problems getting a new one or rebuilt. I had Velvet Drives and it was not easy to find a new one. Let me know if you have any questions.

Please keep us updated with pictures. I’m planning on making the same upgrades, and using your success as a template.

I am looking for the autopilot pump. Part number m81120. The old style with the ports on top.

Updated ours we moved the VHF over and use a iPad in the open space above. Kept a fish finder that previously was located there.

Hello all,

I am new here and new to the large boat world. Previously, I have been a waterskiier but would really like to get into this lifestyle now.

I'm looking at buying a 2000 380. Are there any must ask questions for common issues on these?

The boat I'm considering has the following:

  • Upgraded Twin Mercruiser 8.1 HO with 285 hours (These were swapped after finding water in previous engines I was told)
  • Rebuilt Westerbeke Generator with 30 hours
  • Bow Thruster
  • Radar, GPS, AutoPilot, Upgraded Stereo, VHF, Depth, etc.
  • Newer canvas with extended bimini to cover platform
  • New ice machine
  • Newer fridge
  • Flat screen television
  • Satellite
  • Platform BBQ with cover
Any thoughts, advice or the like is greatly appreciated.
