Official 370 Sundancer thread

Hello all,
There is a switch at my helm marked “ELECT” that does not seem to operate anything. It does not illuminate when switched either. Is this just a spare?
Thanks… learning one button at a time!!
Yeah. I couldn’t figure it out either. It is hooked up to something. I now use it to power my NMEA network.

From what I've seen "ELECT" = ELECTRONICS. The switch, in my case, ran to a plug in the harness for the SR Navigator option. Quite possibly also required for the B&G electronics package if optioned with that. If you have neither then there should be an unused plug wrapped up in the helm harness.

That’s what I figured but nothing went on or off with the switch. Probably some old raynav stuff that’s no longer working.

Interesting, there is a B&G speaker in the helm area that does not do anything. I assumed it was connected to a previous VHF at some time in the boat’s life.

My switch is connected to the “Tri Data” instrument. If any of your electronics have been upgraded the installer may have bypassed the switch. :)

Ok folks. 98 370 with a westerbeke generator. Where the hell is the oil filter and how do you access it. I can’t imagine that it is on the outboard side and completely unaccessable.

just found a diagram. Looks like it’s on the front of the engine, but outboard side. How the hell do you get to it?
Ok I am going to resurrect this for this year. Found oil filter on front outboard side of the engine. Finally got a mirror on it and the date says . . . Oct. 2015. So I'm not the only one who can't get there. Luckily oil is clean and looks brand new.

I really don't see any way to get back there short of taking the boat apart. Maybe the one support beam for the deck and the exhaust hose. Not really what I want to do for routine maintenance. So thinking about a remote filter setup. Who's got some thoughts. Thanks.

That's exactly where it is. Between the oil filter and trying to change spark plugs, I wound up making an access from the coaming locker (ok, floor rot did it for me).
Now it's easy pickings to change the plugs, but the oil filter is still fwd of this access. The way I get to is it to go behind the water lift mufflers and basically lay down across the stern to get to that space. Tight though. I have looked into the remote oil filter adapter, and it is some of the more expensive red paint. Perhaps someone has found it in another (tractor) color. I've also toyed with putting the genset on some kind of slide/lazy susan to gain better access to the outside stuff. No action on it though.

No way I’m getting my fat ass into that position. Will need the fire department to get me out.

and yes the remote oil filter kit is stupid expensive. They must know how these things are installed to make it worth it.

We are going to do a remote filter also. No need to buy from Westerbeke, they are simple and available at any auto parts store. Not sure what Sea Ray was thinking or not thinking with this gen install. Every other one we have had was mounted towards the transom in the middle, just behind engines.

my westerbeke uses a small filter. How do I know what will fit. And I am only going back there one time. So no trial and error. :)
I don't know that is the right one, but there are only so many sizes of filters. Take an old filter to NAPA and they will come up with the right kit. Our local NAPA makes hydraulic hoses to what ever size you need.

So was able to get to the boat today with the kid. After thinking about it for a few weeks, I figured out a way to contort my body to crawl to the genset. Get between the engines. Lay down on my back. Then turn to my right side and crawl until I can get a hand on the oil filter. Worked great, was able to get in and out a few times. BUT, my oil filter wrench had too much play I couldn't get it tight enough in the small space I had to turn the thing -- probably about 1/2 inch. So it was a bust. Stopped at a few stores looking for a hex wrench that would fit, but all were a bit too large and would probably slip as I am assuming the filter is on there pretty well. Going to make one up in the shop -- make it a perfect fit and hope for the best. I really only have one shot at this before it all goes to hell. :)

i'll give you my thoughts/methods as i have a 1998 370DA. I am able to change the oil filter. I am 5'9ish 185 lbs and do it by getting in behind the STBD side motor and then go in arms first over the STBD engine STBD side exhaust hose, far enough that i can see he end of the oil filter and get my wrench on it to loosen. Its not fun but it can be done if you fit and are not too claustrophobic.

Helpful suggestions -
-You have to take all tools /stuff with you and keep it in front of you. Once in there you cannot reach back for anything.
- Take with you:
Adsorbent diaper - put under the existing filter before loosening, Filter is horizontal so it will leak quite a bit before you get it completely off.

Pointers:

Oil filter wrench - i use a smaller one with "jaws that open/close" on filter, and a 3/8" drive socket wrench for oil filter wrench.
Rags - take several
New Filter - put it on before you back out of there. You should NOT prefill it as it will leak
Cell phone - definitely take this in case you get stuck
Flash light to see filter. There is no light back there.

Good luck, not fun but doable. I don't think you could do this at 200 lbs. It is tight at 185 lbs.

Off topic of the generator discussion. Looking to see what prop size and 3 or 4 blade combo works best for the 1995 370 sundancer. My engines are re manufactured long blocks (Gen 5 with roller cam) built to 310hp specs. Running 18 x 21 (3) blades now (Nibral), Cruise at 3200rpm is 16knt. / W.O.T. is 4400rpm / 26knts. Read thru all 214 tabs in this forum searching for an answer and really not clear.
Numbers about right for this ?
