Official 320 Dancer Thread

I am new to the sport cruiser world. I went from 30 ft performance boat to a 2002 320 DA. Have owned since Sept. Have a couple questions.
1. Are any of the 110 volt plugs on boat go through a inverter to be used on 12 volt?. For instace being able to use a home cell phone/computor charger. So far all I have found only work when on shore power or Generator.
2. My Raymarine C80 on GPS screen will usually show vessel 50-75 ft off the side of my true track. May not seem much but I travel rivers/canals at night sometimes that are only a few hundred ft wide. My previous boat had a Lowrance dash mount and was spot on out of the box. It has been updated to the current version.
3. Did purchase a raymarine heading sensor hoping to fix above issue. Where do I mount this thing? Understand to keep low, center of boat and away from elect. but what location? Looking at in the cabin floor locker??
4. The water temp gauge (4 gauge cluster) on port side now pegs out high. Every now and then it comes down a bit but most time turn key on and it goes all the way hot. No alarms, not running hot. Changed out sensor with Merc replacement. No change. Any Ideas?
5. Last is about the Tachs. Neither reading the same as compared to sync gauge. Which is right? Tachs or sync? When engine running one tach may be 1,000 above, then you tap on it, gauge goes all the way max then pops down to correct level. Both gauges seem erratic.

Thanks in advance to everyone.
One thing I can share is when I purchased the boat the gauge lights would not work. After being told by sea ray mech from him testing said that there is some type of module in the system to allow them to dim. It was bad but costly to change. I purchased a small discreet button and wired to the distrubution box/breaker under helm and installed the button in the center of gauge cluster. $5.00 fix. Mind you this "fix" was well after these other issues so they are not related.

I just might be giving this a try this season...always though I was a little light up front!

1. Not from the factory, all the 110v plugs are fed by shore or generator power

2. No idea, my C80 is pretty much dead on. Sounds like a GPS issue though. What GPS receiver do you have?

3. Not sure but I'd try under the helm (be sure to allow for the cabin door to open

4. Could be a bad 4 in 1 gauge, try swapping sides and see if the other one does the same thing. I actually have a pair of these gauges somewhere in my garage, as I updated my gauges and tachs to Smartcraft several years ago.

5. Those tachs are known for their poor reliability, however all is not lost. Pull the tach and look for a screw/switch labeled (from memory) 4/6/8 - select each of these a few times and then put it back where it was (8). That may help for a bit. I also have two tachs that were working when they were pulled - one was newer than the other as the previous owner had replaced it so the hours don't match. There is no way to reset the tach hours.

Thanks for the info. As far as the GPS you ask about the reciever. You mean the antennea? If so it is Raymarine and fed to the C80. Thought about under the helm but I had heard and read about keeping them away from another compass and all the electronics/power boxes etc. Had hope someone actually "seen" their's before and where it was located.
So far still learning alot about this boat.
So far have installed a 29" flatscreen dvd combo on the back wall beside steps coming into cabin and upgraded the stereo system. TV is not AC/DC which is fine with me for what we do with boat.
Thanks

Look through the c80s settings... there may be some sort of position offset that is improperly configured.

#2: The C80 GPS diagnostic screen may be able to help you, below is a copy right from the C80 INSTALLATION Manual.
I was able to find PDF file copies of all my manuals using “google” search, and keep copies on my laptop.

From the manual:

The GPS is used to position your boat on the chart. You can set up your Global
Positioning System (GPS) and check its status using the GPS status icons and the GPS
Status page of the Setup menu.

To access the GPS Status page:
1. Press MENU. The Setup menu is displayed.
2. Highlight and then select GPS Status. The GPS Status dialog box is displayed e.g.
This screen provides, for each tracked satellite, the satellite number, a graphical signal
strength bar, status, azimuth angle and its elevation angle from your vessel. The sky
view graphic shows the position of these satellites.

Positional accuracy is dependent upon these parameters; in particular, the azimuth
and elevation angles are used in a triangulation process to calculate your position.
Horizontal Dilution of Position (HDOP) is a measure of this accuracy; a higher figure
signifies a greater positional error. In ideal circumstances, the figure should be in the
region of 1.0.

When a connection has been successfully made, the GPS status icon in
the top right-hand corner of the screen reads FIX.
If NO FIX is displayed, please refer to the Troubleshooting section on
page 45.

The option to select differential or satellite differential fix is dependent
upon the capabilities of the attached GPS. If your boat is equipped with a Raymarine
GPS, the Differential GPS can be switched on or off using the appropriate soft key.

My 2002 320DA came with a Raystar 120 from the factory. If you don't have a seperate GPS control box on your helm and just have the GPS antenna, the previous owner may have upgraded to the Raystar 125 (a much better system). In that case, follow Bill's advice above.

CJ at the risk of being laughed at, I really don't know what a seperate GPS box would look like. What I have seen on the boat is the Raymarine mushroom antennea on the arch and then only the C80 mounted in the dash. I am assuming you are speaking of some sort of "junction box" where the wiring from mushroom goes into before entering C80? As far as seperate control box, there is nothing else on my helm except the Raymarine tri-Data that powers up when I power up the C80.

I would also like to ask how "involved" was it to change out to the smartcraft gauges? Have thought about this also. Expensive? Mechanic has told me there was a plug in on the engine he thought for this. Located the plug and appeared to be like a 4-5 flat pin type coming off harness.
Thanks for your help.

I will look into this also. Will be 3 weeks before I can get to boat, I am at work overseas, but trying to get my assualt plan ready. Would like to install my heading sensor this time also if I can just figure out where the hell it goes....

Thanks for the info. def going to give this a try.

My bad - The Raystar 120 is indeed just the antenna. The GPS control head I was refering to is the RayNav 300:

raynav300.jpg

The Raystar 125 has no seperate control head, the GPS is within the antenna. So if you don't have a Raynav 300 in your helm, you most likely have the Raystar 125 (the 120 antenna won't do anything without the Raynav 300).

As for installing Smartcraft, it was pretty straightforward. Several folks on this site have done it and you should be able to search for the details. I got most of the parts from ebay. I went with the SC1000 gauges as I didn't have the helm real estate for the larger SC5000 display. Note your engines probably will not support the newer VesselView display. The only "gotchas" are -

- if you go the SC1000 route, and buy from ebay, make sure the firmware in each SC1000 gauge match

- you will need a new helm insert as the SC1000 tachs are smaller than your current tachs, and the SC1000 speedo is larder than the sync gauge. I was able to buy a new panel from SeaRay. The 320 and 340 use the same part.

- if you use the Smartcraft 4-in-1 guages, you will need to run a new wire from each fuel tank to the engine to get it on the bus. It sounds harder than it is, but you will need to find a way to tie into the existing engine plug. In my case, ebay again provided - I found the pins I needed there. They are quite common but you will need to do some research. A knowledgable Merc mechanic should be able to help you as well. You also need to ensure the 12vDC line to each tank sender is disconnected or you could fry your engine ECM.

- if you want the speedo to work you will need to tie the Smartcraft NMEA 0183 inputs into your GPS, or replace your transducer

We recently bought an 8'6" inflatable dinghy. Anyone out there had experience in towing or using Weaver davits? Looking for input on the best method for transporting it.
thanks!!

We installed a Nuatley DinghyRamp HD on our 320:

Works pretty good, and even with the dinghy on the davits you can still move around on the swim platform, mainly because the 320 platform is so huge.

Where you may have a problem is with trim. The trimtabs on the 320DA are too small from the factory. I installed dropfin tabs at the advice of tabman - they help, but with the dinghy onbard and more than a couple of people sitting in the aft seat, I run out of trim authority. The plan this year was to install 12x12 tabs over each prop tunnel and tied into the existing tabs - again on the advice of tabman. That work is on hold pending the coming sequestration. It's looking increasing likely we won't splash this year...I can't absorb a 20% pay cut during boating season and keep boating as usual. This is "forward"?

Steve,

I am using one almost identical to the one CJ has mentioned here for mine and I can easily mount the Dinghy with the 5HP engine attached to the swim platform. I would not recommend “towing” it. This is a much better solution.

PS: One word of caution however, before I put the New Teak on my swim platform I tried to load the Dinghy with a wet swim platform, bad idea. I slipped, off and went right in the drink under the Dinghy. Only thing hurt in the incident was my dignity!

I folks. Just bought a 2004 320DA at the tail of last year. Getting ready for this season. Has anybody tried installing a barbecue grill mount on it? The natural place looks like the swim ladder cover, but I want the ladder accessible during the afternoons. Thinking about rear left of the swim platform. Any thoughts?

Thebells13,
Here's how I mount mine for grilling, but overall a helpful thread too.

I have an 07 320 and I'm looking to replace all bulbs on the boat with LEDs. This seems like its going to be a tedious task having to take a look at each one on the boat, and then trying to best match it online. I checked a few places and no one seems to have a catalog of which ones you need for specific boats. Has anyone gone through this already where they recorded what they purchased and are happy with? Even if just 1 or 2, it helps. and info advice... Thanks

Hello Scuma,

These are the one I ordered for the cockpit last year from superbrightleds.com. they were $15 each and they work very well.
I dont know about the lights in the galley as I still have the originals.
