The fuel tank sender is in the center of the tank. Under the middle cushion of the aft berth (aka the cave) there is a plastic plate on the deck. Remove the screws and the sending unit is directly below it.

Yes, and you'd need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the cover plate (4 screws) and a ratchet and socket to remove the 5 bolts holding the unit to the tank.

Dm, i constantly have to tap my tach. Have not priced them yet, but based off of the other dash parts, i am sure its several hundred. I just replaced my speedo with a floscan, much more useful to me since i use the gps for speed anyway.View attachment 26655

Mike, where did you get the floscan, I was thinking of doing something similar. Also I had issues with both TACHs on my 2001 280, if you go to the back of the guage there is a switch that selects 4 - 6 - 8 cylinders. I just fipped the switch a few times and the tachs have worked well for two years, better that buying new. you can pull the dash or reach up through the access port on the lower portion of the helm, but you better have long arms!!

I got the floscan from defender. They had the best price i could find, around 460. As you can see from the pic the range is pretty broad. I think it goes to 35 gph. I am going to call them and see if they have one that goes to 20. I hope i never burn more than 20 per engine per hour.

I know what you mean about the long arms. I have been re-cable tying all the wires because they have been rubbing on the door and causing resistance. It is amazing how them rubbing just a little bit can really make it harder to open. I shine a flashlight thru the crack as i slide it to see whats interfering. I have just about got it and it made a big difference!

On my 2003 280 I think my starboard side blower is not working. The noise from the blowers is all on the port side and air is moving good out of that side. Get very little air feel out of starboard side. Are the blowers hard to replace?

On our 02 there are no blowers on the stbd side. The blowers are on the port and stbd is just vent hose (in one side - out the other).

I am about to make an offer on a 280 and have a question concerning a trailer for it. The seller has a bunk trailer that he wants 3k for. To have the boat transported to my marina using a boat transport company is $1300.00. Probably less if they can do it on my own trailer, so the 3k purchase price could be a bit less. Is a bunk trailer OK for the 280, or should I hold off and buy a roller trailer down the road. My marina ramp is about average slope, and water level isn't an issue. Also, if I decide to tow it myself, what is the smallest vehicle that can pull a load like this? Will a larger U-Haul truck do it, or do I need to go with a dual-wheel 4x4? Thanks... and hopefully I'll be officially joining this thread as a 280 owner.

Danny, Congrats! I purchased a triple axle bunk trailer for my 280 when I bought it (2008). It was around $5500. No one that I talked to trecommended a roller traiile when you get over around 8k pounds. As far as pulling it, I use my daughters 2006 F350 (Single wheel) Diesel 4x4 and would not recommend anything smaller. We only tow about 6 miles to the ramp twice a year, but that is enough for me. I know there are at least two others on here that tow more than I do, so I am sure they will jump in!
Mike

Danny,

The real issue is not the bunks so much as the axles. To handle the 280 the trailer really should be a tri-axle. If you only need a trailer for winter storage, try and find someone with a big truck. We don't have a trailer and store on stands in the winter, but our boatyard besides having a hydraulic trailer also has a couple large pickups they use for launching and hauling customer boats on trailer.

Thanks Mike & Henry, That's good to know, that the bunk is the way to go. The trailer is supposed to be aluminum/tri-axle, but I haven't actually seen it yet to confirm. I would imagine that would make the 3k price even more enticing.

I pull my 280DA every weekend, usually it is just a few miles to ramp, but it's nothing to take it 3 hours. I pull it with a 350 dually, and have a tri axle trailer with bunks. Pulls very well. My biggest worry is the height with trees.

A 2500 series heavy-duty pickup is probably the most common tow vehicle for the 280DA.

Also, I too have a tri-axle aluminum bunk trailer that I tow mine with. Haven't ever actually seen a roller trailer for this size of boat...I'd be concerned about the point loads on each roller being excessive.

Thanks for the info guys. I always thought a roller trailer was the "ultimate" but I never had a boat as big as the 280. I discussed this all with my marina to day, and they said they can have one of their workers take one of their vehicles to do the tow, and pay him for his time. I'm sure it will be a lot cheaper using my trailer, than the 1300.00 price I got from a boat hauler. Problem solved!

Crazy question, but does anyone know what type of replacement bulb I need for one of the helm multi-gauges (the one that contains, oil pressure, water temperature, etc.)? I've been meaning to climb up under there and remove it, but....worth a shot to ask here!

Well, we agreed on a price, so everything goes as planned I should be the proud new owner of an '03 280 (with Kohler generator) and tri-axle trailer. The survey is next week, and if all goes well I might have about a month in the water at my marina this season. The boat is going to semi-retirement, going from the Jersey shore to a nice lake. I tried to locate a freshwater 280 with a single 496, at a good price, but that wasn't possible. It is fresh-water cooled, so although not a freshwater boat, at least I know the block didn't see saltwater.

A question on the V-berth cushions. I gave them a quick look and there didn't appear to be zippers to remove the covers for cleaning, and are stapled on. Funny, my 220 had removable covers. How do you guys clean the covers? If removing is the only way, I have an pneumatic stapler, and putting them back on shouldn't be too hard. Or would it???

I'm sure I'll have a slew of questions after I actually take possession on the boat.

My friend owns a carpet cleaning company and he used the steam cleaner type set up on mine. Turned out nice. The aft cabin cushions are zippered and removeable.

Shifting gears here, does anyone know the size of the water system tubing (the blue and red stuff)? The choices are 1/2" and 15mm. I want to make a by-pass for the hot water heater.

Henry

I think I remember jason78's post that talked about this and I belive it's 15mm tubing. I'll see if I can find the link.
