Official 280 Sundancer Thread

496 MAG - what is the oil capacity?

Drained the oil out of my 2003 280 Sundancer since its going into storage today. I drained about 9 quarts or so.

What is the official oil capacity of the 496 MAG when also changing the oil filter?

Thanks!

My trim tabs are not working. Is there a fuse and if so where is it located? I could find no mention of one in the owners manual. Thanks.

For the 496, the manual says 9 quarts with the filter. Sounds like you are right on.

I don't think there is a dedicated fuse but check the EIM fuses, and test light to make sure you have power at the pump..(sorry.. kinda arbitrary) and Presentation had BOTH trim pumps go out simultaneously for no reason recently. But sounds like a power/fuse problem... no switches work? trailer?
here is a link of exploded parts if it turns out to be the solonoid(sp)

Jim, open the access panel under the helm and look up to the side and see if the fuse is there somewhere.

I have not had that happen to me on this boat but I have heard you will blow a fuse when you are operating both tabs at the same time in opposite directions.

Wait.... look at #4 ! maybe an inline Fuse!! never noticed that!

less than 5 gal bucket. happens after cruise and also after sitting overnight (after pumping out post cruise). marina says that it does not leak after 2 hrs dead in water (telling me that it is not through hull,.....at least not below water line) . The water is ALWAYS contained in the center channel and show no sign of leaking in from port or stbd under the motors. My guess is prop wash against transom swim platform bolts perhaps; added transducer transom mount; and/or on board hoses/clamps for head, AC, generator, etc. Marina servicde merely says that much is not abnormal? But I like dry. Should I pump out the bilge with fresh water each time?

If the water isn't due to rain then something needs fixing. While your Marina feels taking on near 5gal a day is not abnormal, that is only because they are setting the std.

Thanks for the ideas on the fuse location. I will look further this weekend.

I am kicking around the idea of removing the GLOMEX antenna... First let me say that I will NEVER need it, and it's ugly(imo).

The hole that it leaves what should I do...
Fiberglass it in?
4200 in some sort of plug?

I am leaning toward plugging it so on resale I "could" put it back ...although I plan to have this boat a LONG time and am curious about doing a little fiberglass work up where nobody would see it. anyone else remove that thing?

If it were me, I would glass it if -- a) I planned to keep it for a long time and b) I never had plans to add another accessory such as radar. As long as you leave the wires in the arch the next owner can drill for an antenna if they choose.

So you never watch over the air HD? I don't care for the look of the Glomex but it works great for picking up HD in my area.

I removed the antenna but left the base for future use. I found a plastic cap for the end to keep the water out. If you don't want the base either how about making up a flat starboard or stainless cover for the hole that uses the same screw locations as the current base. Easy to put back to original that way.

I sure the heck can't get crap for HD around the lake. But, I never did check to see if the Glomex wire came loose from it up in the radar arch, guess thats a project for next summer...

You must have a bad wire. I get the TC HD channels in Red Wing area without any problem.

True. The cable must not be connected somewhere. Check the connection at the antenna and/or adjust the gain via the switch in the cabin.

I tried once to get some channels.... we got one spanish station.... fuzzy... I thought you needed the dig converter and even though its $20 I wasn't going to spend any more $ on that setup. We just bring a couple movies for nighttime. Since I don't get out as much as I'd like the last thing I do is watch TV in the boat....
I think I'll plug the top- probably with something that uses the old screw holes(good idea) Thanks for the suggestions.

Hello to everyone, great information posted here. I'm seriously looking for a Sea Ray in the 280 - 320 range, hope to see one of them in the Fort Lauderdale boat show at the end of the month.

Maybe you can help me with these questions:

1- Anybody leaves the boat in salt water all the time ? I'm moving to a house that has a boat slip in Miami and planning to leave the boat there. Any experience ?
The house has a broken davit, and would need a new and big boat lift to handle a 280 or bigger. Anybody tried the floating docks on this size of boat ?

2- Also looking for a dealer that has access to the water, so that you can boat to the dealer instead of trailering. Saw Marinemax of Miami has that facilities, anybody had experience with them ?
