Official 280 Sundancer Thread

ANYONE ? BUT SPECIFICALLY -Henry--
I was looking through some old threads and saw that you may(?) have re-wired your EIM. I'm looking to put the T.V./ dvd combo onto the unused accy button.

1.How tough of a job is this?
2. Are their wire ends/leads/ loose wires? coming from the EIM or will I have to go to Radio $hack to tap the loom?

I will post pics of this project after this weekend (hopefully).
Just looking to get someback ground to save time.

Not sure if anyone brought this up as well but SR did change where they put the waterline strip on the 280's at some point as well. If you look at the older 280's you will see that the strip follows the curvature(sp?) of the hull and comes down lower into the water while the newer 280's sits up higher on the side of hull. A good place to notice this is where the strip ends at the back. The older is lower while the newer is higher near the rubrail.

Stopped alot of that by adding Snap In carpet to the swim platform when anchored. The dog loves it and keeps him outside to dry off. Less dog smell through out the rest of the boat.

No thats the wife not the dog before anyone asks.

We are going to replace the cockpit carpet this spring. Was going to see how much the swim platform would be too. Do the snaps get stepped on when not on? Where do you store when not in use?
Looks great

I used the 'unused' accy switch to power my GPS head, depth transducer and fluxgate compass. Look at the wiring diagram in your owner's manual and find the pin out location and color combo. Then go looking for it in the loom. It may be back a ways. I seem to recall mine was back like 18-24" into the protector sheathing. Once you find it, that is the power. Make sure the breaker associated with you device(s) matches. If the amps on the EIM breaker are greater than the smallest max amps on a single device you need to add an inline fuse EQUAL to that max device amps, do not use the difference between EIM and total max device! Then all you need is a ground from device. The - terminal on the EIM should be ok (unless you are hooking up a Miller Welding machine!).

The engines definitely have something to do with it but we have been discussing whether or not a slight hull change may have taken place between the 2002 and 2003 model years which seems to be when the plant of manufacture changed from Phoenix, AZ to Tellico, TN. The earlier model's swim platforms seem to sit noticeably higher than the newer models regardless of engine configuration. You will see in some posts earlier ths week I described two different 280s at my marina, both with T4.3/A1 which are very different in how the platform is out of the water. We have seen pics of how high up Henry's platform is on his 2002, maybe someone can post a pic of a 2003+ 496/B3 sitting in the water.
Here is a pic of a 2008 with 496/ and genny

Scott, is that a custom aft curtain or the standard Great lakes that came with it? Or did you have zippers added on both sides of the rear window? I have the standard Camper Aft curtain but really like the way you can zip up the rear corners on yours.

Jason
We had our local canvas shop put zippers and flaps on both sides. It gives us a few different options depending on the weather. He also put strapson all 3 pieces so we can roll them up in place. It makes getting in easier when the full canvas is up.

I think the cost was $125. They recomend putting 8 snaps on it, but I only use it at rest so I put 4 on instead(1 on each corner). The snaps are at the edge and out of normal traffic. It does get wet with everyone (dog included)getting on and off alot. When we get back to the dock we let it dry in the sun or hang it over the nearest sail boat. We store it in the transom locker.

I just read that link.

I find it funny that none if you knew the purpose of those vents.

The Sundancer is a smaller boat so things need to be multi-purpose.

The swim platform with these vents doubles as a bidet.

Yes
Mine was frequently covered in urine.

Has anyone come up with a better way to hold the table that forms the front bunk? Many times we have the bunk all set up and someone climbs onto the front bunk and the table falls off one side or the other. I see that on the newer 280's SR made the little pieces of wood wider to give more surface area to hold the table. Thanks.

I know the whole "how low my 280 sits in the water" is old news, but I know there was some discussion about where the swim platform is located might be the differance. I found this pic from this past fall when she was pulled for winter, it gives a pretty good shot of where my platform sits. I think someone was also asking where they could mount a C80, you can kind of see where mine is located. This was a sad day... :(

Tonka's boat is new (2008?) and he has the 496 w/BIII. His boat sits very high compared to the twin 5.0's. He has changed the picture on his signature to a bow shot but several months ago had a clear transom shot. Perhaps he will come out of hibernation and post a picture.

Just returned from 2 weeks in Mexico. Perfect weather the whole time....85-90 and sunny all 14 days and my kids were perfect angels (2 boys, no fighting, no yelling for two weeks....wtf...not complaining). It wasn't perfect though, I didn't rotate often enough so my front is more tan than my back....hate when that happens .

Back on topic....here's a pic of mine with a 496 and genny. I sit high and never had a blow hole issue (the swept back antenna probably has something to do with it).

I'm looking at a '04 280DA tomorrow that is suppose to only have 100 hours. What should I look for as warning signs of problems. I'll have someone look at it once it can be put in the water - but I'll need to put a deposit down to hold it til then.

I can't think of any specific things to look for other than obvious signs of abuse or neglect. I would take a very close look in the engine compartment and that will probably be a good sign of how the boat was taken care of. Definitely don't buy it until you have a survey done and engines/outdrives checked. What engine/outdrive package is it equipped with?

I'm in agreement with getting a survey done. Best money I ever spent and the surveyor was real helpful giving me some tips, etc.

It has the twin 4.3's. I just to make sure its really 100 hours. A 100 hour boat should jump out like a new one I'd think.

Being a 2004 is should be equipped with Smartcraft gauges. The reading will be accurate unless the ECMs failed at some point and were replaced. With that said I cant think of a way to tell with absolute certainy that it only has 100 hours unless it it has documented maintenance records with hours noted. My personal opinion is that most likely the readings are accurate. I would worry more about maintenance being done on a 2004 with 100 hours than if it really had a 100 hours or not if you know what I mean. Sometimes it is worse for them to sit than being used. As long as the maintenance was done you should be OK. This is another reason to have the engines inspected.
