Official 280 Sundancer Thread

I was told by the dealer before I ever bought my boat that this was very common with the 5.0's because of the weight of the engines. Mine is as yours is low to the water. The only thing I have noticed over the years is more and more stress cracks on the exterior edge of the platform but other than that I understand it is very normal.

If you read all the comments on this topic there are other boats with the 5.0s that are not experiencing this situation. Does anyone know the difference in weight between the 4.3s and the 5.0s?

I have twin 5.0's, closed water cooling (although no genset). The image shows where the platform sits - higher in the water than the images posted. I agree with other posters - not clear why you would be sitting so low.

At a closer look of your picture I see now yours is much lower than mine.

According to the specs I found there is 100lbs per engine difference.

Yes, I have a problem. I burned off about 25 gallons of fuel this weekend and I'm not sitting any higher. Also, my top speed is only about 40mph. I have fresh paint though I wasn't happy with the way the dealer glopped it on. I am waiting to hear the outcome of Clay's investigation since we seem to be in about the same situation.
With this exception I love the boat. I installed the digital converter on the TV and watched Tiger play this afternoon. Also cleaned the gunk out of the door slide so it opens like new. Life could be worse!

This has my interest - I'm looking at a 280 twin 5.0 as well. Sits low(er) and the bilge is wet.

Looking for feedback on continued problems with the IAC's in my 280's twin 4.3 liter MPI's. Marine Max Miami (79th Street) replaced them for free only twice. They claim that my 5 year Passport extended warranty only covers them once. Well, they go bad every year. I keep changing the IAC plus the muffler, but keeps going bad after a year or less on both engines.

Both of ours went out within 2 weeks of each other in the spring of 2008. So far, so good and no more problems. They were covered under warranty so I let the Marinemax tech's replace them but it looks like an easy project. Both tech's commented there are "good" IAC's and "bad" IAC's. It was their opinion that different manufactures supply the product and their is a difference between who makes them. That also might just be the story they have been instructed to tell unhappy owners when problems arise. It might be worth ordering a couple of IAC's on-line from a different vendor and see it they by chance have some from a different manufacturer.
And, what muffler did you change??

I'm having the same problem. Is your mic cord dry rotted? Mine is. I think that's why it keeps cutting out. was thinking about re-dipping the cord in tool handle dip (not sure what it's really called) so I did not have to replace as well. I'll let you know if it works. Have not had much luck trying to find a new mic. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Takin 5

No, the cord isn't cracked or anything... I know I can be talking to someone, the mike keys, the TX comes on the display but nothing goes out. It receives fine. If I turn the radio off then back on again it works... Dunno whats going on with it, I just know I ordered a new Icom from Jim and it should be here this week.

I have a 2005 280 sundancer. Can you tell me what the round tube about 1" in Dia. about 4" high that sets infront of the low bilge pump. It looks like it came a part .I would like to know who makes it and what it is. Thanks in advance

Where does the tube lead to?

By “Front” do you mean closer to the bow or stern?

A 1” diameter black tube with a bolt on the end that leads to the bottom of your engine is the engine oil drain hose.

When new the tube gets attached to the garboard drain plug but I’ve seen many boats where this chain is no longer attached to the plug so the hose just sits there in the bilge.

A photo would help a lot here.

Doug, I don't think the post is about the drain tubes but the black plastic plug right below the water tank, next to the forward bilge pump. I've always wanted to take it out as it only helps accumulate the gunk in the bilge water. In any event, I believe it is a plug for the transducer hole; allows you to take the ducer out should you have to do something with it. I wouldn't bother fixing it if it cracked or broken. Just take the whole thing out of there. I don't think anyone with a 280 has ever had use for it.

I need the boot cover for the front bemini top. I have the tan top. Somehow, somewhere mine is missing. If anyone has one for sell let me know.
