Official 280 Sundancer Thread

The 'Halon system' is a fire suppression devise, it automatically recognises a fire and reacts by releasing a gas that extinguishes the fire by replacing the air around it there by removing one of the three elements needed to have a fire!

I am aware of what a Halon System is, but was picking fun of the ad listing that said "Additional 100 gal fuel Halon system"

The only way to find out is to ask so I sent them a message and asked about the extra 100 gallon tank.

I'm guessing the Halon statement is a case of a missing comma though.

I will report back if they reply.

Thanks Tonka. If they reply as yes will you please ask where the heck it is located?

If it really has an extra 100gal tank somehow, it will give a whole new meaning to the Swim Platform sitting low in the water!

Thanks Tonka. I was going to call them but didn't have the time. I'm really curious as to where they put the extra 100 gallons myself.

They cut the mid birth in half. Then they put a 2nd tank there.

Well, I love most everything about my 280. One thing that has driven me crazy since I bought the boat has finally been "corrected".

I am sure anyone that ever sleeps in the aft cabin would be familiar with this. The air vent for the aft cabin that is mounted in the rear of the aft dinette seat points right where your head lays. You can partially deflect the airflow by turning the vent but that does not cut down on how hot it can get back there and the constant annoyance of the air blowing in or towards your face.

I have paid the extra $1.25 that Sea Ray chose not to and replaced the vent with one that has a damper to adjust airflow. It took about 4 minutes to replace and works great.

Here is the link for the Vent, enjoy-

On my 2001 the vent is multi-directional and baffle-able by twisting the knob in the center

Well, some of us got short changed. Other 280s at my dock do not have the damper. The only one I am not sure about is the 02 because he is never there. All the others are 2003+, not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.

Regardless of who has and does not have, whoever did not get one, can now.

I knew you would Jason

Would rather have the berth than the fuel capacity;

Answer me this though, port engine and jenny struggle to start (appears to be a flat battery/s) but only when the engines have been running for a while and everything is nice and hot.
Static readings show 12.7+ volts in all three.
I've undone and re-tightened all main cable joints, going to pull the main battery switches off tomorrow and check them.

Any other ideas??

Kiwi,

It sounds like a battery issue or a loose connection. If you look at this thread and check out Post#11 http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37522

fc3 has a great explaination on how to check the alternator. I had some similiar issues and got tired of chasing the issue so I replaced all 3 batteries with new Group31 AGM batteries. Ever since then it has been good.

The final straw was a conversation I had with a tech at Mercury when he told me that ECM failures had been related in some cases to voltage problems from bad batteries. That was all I needed to hear.

Thanks Jason,

A little voice in my head tells me to buy new batteries;

Other things that spring to mind are,
When plugged into shore power they both spin up (port motor & genny) sweet as. So I'm thinking its eliminating everything but the batteries. I've heard that batteries can show a good voltage on the metre but when you come to use it, they wont deliver! I guess there is a test for this voltage drop scenario.

I'd be surprised if it were the alternator, both motors plus looms and all controls, gages and components are all brand new.

Anyway off down the boat in a little while to continue my track and trace mission.

Fellow Kiwi
I had similar issues on my 340 and replaced the two ports side batteries and have had no issues since.

You are coming into summer and my Dad tells me the weather in Auckland has been good if not a little cold at least his garden is doing great.

Enjoy your summer I just don't know how you can afford to run your boat with New Zealand fuel prices.

Take care

gday mate,
Yep summer is just around the corner, sitting on mid 20's and today has brought the first rain for a few weeks!!

I know what you mean about fuel prices, I would like to change to a 340 with twin Yanmar diesels but just a little shy of the coin needed. I have my eye on a 'sweet as' one in Picton.

The irony is 'once' its bought I can travel twice the distance for the same cost in fuel. The admiral likes the running cost idea but is taking some convincing on the purchase cost

Anyone ever make a companion seat modification?

Ok my 280 is in many ways my perfect boat except
for one pet peeve.
Both I and my wife do not care for the ubiquitous
L shaped lounge seating for the companion seating.
We really, really, REALLY would just like a second
captains chair instead.
So many express cruisers are built this way and for
the life of me, I don't see why.
These lounge seats are made for sitting looking
backwards at best. Even if you sit looking forward
you can't see a thing, which is not very enjoyable nor
helpful for the skipper, as you're sitting too low
to spot any floating obstacles or unseen aporoaching
traffic.
So....has anyone ever removed that seating and
replaced it with an identical captain seat?
If not, any tips on if this is possible, within
reason?

I've only had my 280 a month, but we're tending to agree with you. On a couple of outing where it was just my immediate family, my wife had trouble finding a good place to sit. She mostly just stood next to me, or with a leg under herself on the lounge, trying to see forward.

On trips where we've had company, I usually feel kinda lonely.. :smt001 Which is fine, I just love driving the boat and paying attention to the outside. But, everyone else in the back of the boat.

I would have preferred a double-helm seat, I think. I don't know...but somethings not right with the forward portion of the cockpit seating...

That's interesting. My wife and virtually every passenger I've had on my boat love that lounge seat. None of them seem interested in watching forward as we cruise.

Woody, I never realized how uncomfortable that seating was
until I sat there while my wife drove. Try it and see how you
feel being below any line of sight while booking along at 30 mph!
Ok if you want to be oblivious to where you're going but I'd
prefer to be up higher in a chair.
I just wish I could figure a way to modify it....

I agree with you in some situations. Normally, my wife likes to lay out on the seat and look to the back or the kids sit down there so it works good for us most of the time.

Problem is you will have to go up to a 340 to get the extra (separate) captain's chair (at least in the mid-2000s gen SR DA cruisers). The 300 and 320 have a double captains chair but I don't really care to have any one except my wife or kids sitting right next to me.

I don't see any easy way your could put a captains chair there. Your main problem will be the raised height of the deck under that seat to accomidate the aft cabin head room. I think this is the reason why they decided to put that style seating there.

Same here! That is my Wife's favorite place and pretty much the reason we chose the SR 280 over everything else we looked at. She has never been interested in looking forward while cruising. The only time she is interested in seeing out is in no wake zones and looking at the beautiful homes on the ICW.
