Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Had a busy summer and didn't get a chance to go out much. Started the generator, the antifreeze came out and then the sea water followed. It ran about 30 seconds and cut off like I turned the switch off. Sea cock is open, cleaned out the strainer at the beginning of the year. Would fire it up again and same thing, runs about 30 seconds and cuts off. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Kevin

Yes that is correct. Tabs down will force the bow down making it easier to plane. Once on plane though this will create resistance and slow the boat down (more gas consumption) so when on plane most of the time you can bring them all the way to the up position.

Had a friend on the boat the other day and he was telling me to use the trim tabs while underway in conjunction with trimming up the outdrives to help save fuel. To me, I thought that using the trim tabs would slow me down, yes? Thanks!

Thanks, Danny! I was afraid that was the case. Will this arm use existing hardware or do I need to get that too?
They are supposed to be straight. I replaced mine last year, as one was bent also, due to failing. Let me know if you need the part number, as it can be hard to find. I suggest you get a higher number if you want it easier to open. It's more effort to close it, but easier to open with a higher pound number.

Update: here is the part you need. Replace both sides, while you are at it. You want both to do equal work, and both should wear evenly.

The Tabs in the down postion (even slightly) will lower the bow causing more friction with the water thus slowing you down. While on plane only use the tabs to even yourself out if needed. If you can run with the tabs up and trim the outdrives up slightly to get the best running performance.

Need to remove the pipe plug on top of the coolant reservoir, then finish filling with coolant. Should be able to add another pint. Bet it will run forever after that.

They just snap on the existing hardware. Very easy to install, but you need to prop up the hatch while you connect the ends of the piston. I'm pretty sure I just held it up against the back of my body while I did the installation, but it isn't easy doing it that way. The hatch is very heavy and can cause a serious injury if it falls on you, so be careful.

Kevin, you are saying the antifreeze that came out was from the winterization, correct? I could be interpreting it wrong, but it sounds like Mike is saying you had a coolant leak and need to fill it up.

Others here are more knowledgable about gens but the only time I had a problem with the gen on my 280 was when the strainer was clogged or the impeller needed replacing.

Are you getting any beeps or codes when it shuts down?

That's what I thought. I don't even see why people waste their time using trim tabs to get up on plane... Maybe if there is a lot of weight.. But I've never needed my trim tabs... Just sayin...

Correct, it was winterized. They changed the oil and filter, and changed the impeller. All I did was clean out the strainer and fire it up. Runs for 30 seconds and cuts off like I'm turning it off...

If you haven't done it yet I would change the plugs, and the fuel filter also. I had a problem last year of the genny cutting out, and I changed the plugs and filter and presto, running great ever since. BTW, off topic but interesting, I put a Bosch Irridium plug (top of the line plug) in my new scooter. It would stall after warming up and not restart. Did some troubleshooting and found no spark at plug. Turns out the new plug was bad. I switched to NGK Platinum and it's been running great. So much for the 10.00 spark plugs!

Has anyone ever had an experience with the EIM on a 280? I lost power to both switch pads.

Recent experience on the port side. Just ordered a new one yesterday for $330.00!

There are two wires, one each, that supply +12V and ground to those switch pads. The other two are Tx/Rcv wires going to a Mux processor in the EIMs. So you should be able to at least check for the +12 wire and see if they are getting power.

I absolutely must use full down tabs to get on plane with more than ~5 people in the back of the cockpit, otherwise it just won't happen.

And u use them in rough seas to get me slower and get the bow down while still staying on plane.

Otherwise, keep them up and use only for leveling.

Weren't the responses you got earlier in the day to your other post on this topic helpful, or were you looking for independent confirmation?

Henry
Just looking for more response. Since its a 280 i thought i would put it on this board and see if any other 280's had problems.

Where did you order it for 330.00? MarineMax wants 461.00

Thanks to all for the responses... Couldn't find anything wrong, mechanic came over, started the gen, put it under load for 15 min and it ran like a champ! Go figure. He said prolly air in the line and it worked itself through. Going out today, knock on wood! Thanks again all!
