Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Danny, I definately understand. I just had to throw that out there. The dealer tried telling me they only sell for around $30k, in an attempt to justify his $24K trade in offer. I told them I put almost that much in it last year (motors, manifolds, transom assy, outdrive, canvas, batts). I think you are right in the range. Of course, since you want a single, you are mostly going to find twins! (Murphy has to always jump in)

Yes, the dealers around here want to make money at both ends also. Another added benefit of the single engine is the added space to work, in the engine compartment. I have never done it, but if whatever I buy should wind up needing manifolds/risers, I'll probably do the work myself and the added elbow room will come in handy.

Wow, I hope you told that dealer where to go! Was that PW Marina? Shame on them. Go to http://www.boattrader.com and look up our 280DA, the prices have risen over the last couple of years actually. I bought mine at the perfect time I guess...

Gunn, actually it was one on the other side of the bay. I am actually talking to the boat owner about a possible deal. Not likely though. We just git back from 4 days at solomons. Boat was a dream! I was thinking 50/55 would be good, with all the improvements and options?

I have been looking at all the online ads for 280's to try to get a good, fair asking price. I have not seen any other 280's with the mattress option, like we have. Does anyone else have one? I know it had to be factory or dealer, because the locker doors are all redone very nicely to compensate for the extra 6" of mattress. Just curious.

I've never seen one like that, got some pics to share?

Here is a pic of the mattress. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1345919058.786821.jpg

I'm getting close to start making the rounds and actually choosing with boat to buy. Of course, that's assuming mine will be sold tonight, when my eBay auction ends. I have a question concerning the 280's engines used when it's a single screw boat. In '01 the 6.2L engine was used, and it looks like Sea Ray switched to a more powerful 496 MAG in '02. For anyone that has a 6.2L engine, does this provide enough power to get on plane in a reasonable time with about 4 people and full water/gas on board, or should I be looking for the 496 powered boat. I don't do a lot of traveling, and don't pull towables. I'd just like to get where I'm going, which is usually 10 minutes from my dock, without a hassle getting it up on plane.

Not tryin to be picky, but I believe the 2001 4.3's are 210 HP. At least the EFI ones in mine are.

THe carburated 4.3's are 190hp. Nice mattress. We just added a 3" memory foam cut to size and the wife sewed a fitted sheets and a custom comforter. It's night and day. I couldn't even imagine a 6: mattress. I just turned the dinette into a couch by having 2 cushions made. I added a 4" bottom filler cushion and a 7" backrest that was angled to the boat. Very comfortable and a great place to take a nap or watch TV. I'll upload pics soon.

Yes, we loose a little head room while sitting in bed, but the great nights sleep is worth it. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1346343198.744092.jpg. This pic shows how they modified the locker doors to compensate. I would love to see pics of how you modified the dinette. That is one thing i love about the 340's.

Some other mods:
Moving the batteries up into the wasted hole.

This freed up room for my spares containers, but was thinking this is where i might store the grill. If i ever get around to getting one.

This shows the absence of the bilge pump hoses, since i rerouted them.

Mike, love the modifications. Where'd you re-route the bilge hoses? I absolutely hate that mine lay right along the bottom like they do.

Bucit, would love to see pics of your dinette conversion too. I think Floriduramax did the same thing, but I have never seen pics either.

So Mike do the wine glasses make a lot of noise when cruising the bay?!! How was the weather on your Solomon's cruise? We visited there for Labor Day 2011. Got beat up coming home with winds out of the south and 3+ waves; felt like we were all in a heavyweight boxing match after that!

Tom, I hated those hoses laying in the bilge too. Since they were corrugated, I could never wipe them clean. They come from the pumps, up by the pump side of the genny, then follow what I think is the genny exhaust hose ( if i remember right). That way they are up and out of the way. I actually set the pumps in a bucket of water to make sure it worked. I may evenually add check valves, but since the are never really used, I have not been to worried about backflow. I will try to take some pics tonight since I am hoping to finish installing the floscan.

The wine glasses are plastic, so they do not rattle that I am aware of. I am trying to decide if I wantto build a wine rach in that locker somehow, or use the wasted space under the stereo. (CD rack) I tried getting that out the other day, but not much luck. If I use that space, it would be possible to tap into the AC duct to have it "Chilled."

The trip was great! We got a little wet on the way back. Good thing I had picked up a new wiper.
