Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

With s boat, i never want to hear i cant or i wont. I would also probably be 210 lbs but working on this beast i have atleast lost 10 lbs in blood. When building a sea ray the guys must have thought. Hmmmm this will be the worst spot to put this so lets throw some sharp shit around it to make it even more fun
Jeff I’m cracking up. You are right sit I think the elves built them. I will throw a ray of sunshine out there and say my Marine Electrician is top f$%^ing drawer so if your in my area let me know. He’s responded with “I’ll take the batteries out, put the new charger in and wire the batteries while you work the generator and I’ll hand you tools.”

My genny guy said he wanted to pull my genny out so he can work it on his bench in his air conditioned garage. Im like o hell no and get your skinny ass in there and fix it. Im paying $125 a hour for you and im the mutt running around handing you tools.

It is probably just your up and down solenoids that went bad. If ya have to you can take the 4 screws out of the plate and move the entire assembly closer to you. If its the up its the top one, if its the down its the bottom one. Just remember when redoing the wires blue is up (sky) green is down ( grass )
Same thing Robert from TB said, tomorrow I’m going down with a flame thrower, if she survives then she’s my girl. Kidding, not the boats fault, all my military brothers and sisters out there will agree. EVERYTHING can be traced back to human error, mine is lack of maintenance, she’ll get there. Who ever gets our boat 10-15 years from now will be happy.

I’m with you brother

I keep a extra set of solenoids on the boat. Cheap enough and up and down are the same. Never know when shit goes bad. O wait, yes i do. When ya have 6 friends with a cooler full of food and beer waiting on the dock on a perfect saterday..... yup

Jeff that’s when stay at the dock and enjoy work best … my 4th

Yep I agree Jeff, like you 60, 210, 5’10” (like to say I’m 5’11’” but 6’ daughter volleyball player says no). I’m much more upset about the GenSet, since I’ve been sitting here with you guys I’ve watched the YT stuff and ordered the part. This guy tells me I need a new GenSet. Great thing will be firing them tomorrow and arguing the bill. Just so everyone knows, here’s what has actually happened.

TowBoat took me over, 9 miles then rode me back to my marina $0.00, I tipped Robert the TB Captain and never touched a line, I did try. Awesome

No communication from the mechanic marina. I have to say they were great when they sent the tech to my marina for two other repairs, they are owned by the same company, but don’t have techs at mine. Then I get doom and gloom about how my GenSet needs to be replaced and they can’t fix the relays but need to “adjust the hours” on my estimate.

Should be interesting tomorrow, I’ll be curious if they even get the drive in the water and if so how much fluid will be in the bilge. No calls so far about come get your boat.

News to follow
So I guess my displeasure made it’s way from the service writer to the service manager. Received a call about 2:00 saying they had removed the relays and would have the new ones installed today or first thing in the AM, it poured here this morning so I’m ok with that. It is definitely the relays btw Little Ducky. Wires were jumped and drive moved as it should. He also apologized for the techs comment on he can’t reach them so I’m SOL. Guess they found and elf. Then as politely as I could I shared this link with the Service writer and Service Manager.
As well as the one in our posts for the part for the GenSet. Both were silent and offered to take the cost of the part I bought off my bill.

Service Manager asked that I give them another shot next time I need something, we’ll see.

So she’s supposed to be ready after 1200 tomorrow, drive working and GenSet serviced, I just need to install the impeller drive, I think I’m going to put in a new impeller and gasket again, it came with the service kit but figured I would have it all apart anyway.

Thanks for letting me vent last night.
I love my boat!
Jon

Ok Crew, I’m tired of looking, flame me if you like, where is the post for the new power vent actuator, I have verified power for both in and out (Have I told you my marine electrician is fantastic?) I need a new actuator.
Thanks!

This is the one i got, had to move the bracket a little so it did not break the glass when it closes completly. Just check

Just a quick reminder to stay on top of your exhaust manifold replacement schedule. We sold our 290 last year. I saw that our old 290 was in a nearby boat yard, so I touched bases with the new owner.

I sadly heard that the port exhaust manifold failed (salt water got through the manifold) and took out the port engine. No one wants to see that.

The port engine was replaced under my ownership in 2015, so I wonder if there is something unique about how the port side is configured with the twin 5.0L / Bravo II setup.

I did both my 98 5.0 efi motors, manifolds, risers, flappers and all boots last winter. They on a 3 -5 year replacememt schedual.

I have a buddy with a 2004 26 ft sundancer with a 5.7. I helped him do his oil change and some maintenance at the start of last season. Asked him when he did his manifolds and risers last. His response was never. I have had the boat for 8 years and doesn't run hot. Im like dude your playing with fire and should be done asap. He says sure, sure il do it next year. Well on his first trip out he runs the boat and comes in to check the oil and guess what. MILKSHAKE. Lost all last season and a good chunk so far of this season. $8,000 for a new motor and mechanics say his manifold and risers went and dump water into the cylinder heads. Lesson learned i said and get that shit on a maintenance schedual

All right Jeff, take a breath. Where are we and who’s boat are we talking about? I know I joined in late, sorry

Im oit of NJ and that story is just a follow up on the importance of maintaing your manifolds and risers

You fellas are scaring the crap out of me with the manifold and riser stories. I have no idea when they were done on mine. She’s been in fresh water throughout, has only 640 hours on each engine and all temps/pressures are normal. I was gonna invest in getting the B2 drives serviced/ bellows etc in the autumn this year. I’m thinking I should get the manifolds n risers done same time. Better get saving! :-(

Pilot,
Dont want to scare but honestly there is no more of a sinking feeling in your gut when you have a perfectly good running motor shot for something so stupid. Just think, how long have you owned it. That is atleast how old they are

So I’m getting ready to do mine for the simple fact no one can tell me when they were done. Looks pretty straight forward from a gear head point of view, I won’t have to contort my body too crazy. So. The reason for my post is all the marina mechanics I’ve talked to say that on the lake it’s a one and done. I think you saltwater guys are supposed to do them every 3-4 years. No?
