Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

What part are you looking for?
Just new wipers Jeff, Hawk found a good YouTube with the correct clip in the RainX pack, I’ll open up one tomorrow. I get 20% off everything at AutoZone so I’ll see if I can help the group. I’m “supposed to be there” and buy the parts myself. Has to be a workaround to that.

Hey group, thought I would throw out a quick update. We are about 3 weeks in on the boat. Spent some nights and a weekend on it in the marina. We are learning quickly what to bring and what not. The fuel sender is fixed. Tank is 17” deep, I bought this.

Moeller 035765-10, Electrical Reed Switch Fuel Sending Unit, 15 Inch Tank Depth
Works perfect, bought the 15” because the 16” was out of stock. Shows just under 1/2 tank so nice to know I should have a little reserve. Canvas should HOPEFULLY be done this week and some new graphics as well so long as the weather cooperates.

Hanging out
More to follow.

yep, not to the top (4800) but full fuel, full water, 1/4 waste, 2 adults and a child and gear - 4600RPM WOT. That was with no tabs, no wind/flat sea, and trimmed about 1/4 the way up.
So I splashed today... new everything... engines.... outdrives etc.... hopefully everything will work..... I have 2 questions for you... the props I used (from you)... do you remember the rpm's you needed to get on plane?
second is... I put new outdrives on, and when I shift from forward to neutral, or reverse to neutral if I don't go really slow it will stall the engine... do you have any advice for that?? I am thinking shift cable adjustment... not sure which way to go though.... thanks

Regarding #2 question, yes, I believe you need a shift cable adjustment. The MPI's are a little finicky and don't recover quickly when the ignition cuts out during shifting.

Not MPI.... 4 barrel carbs.... Do you know if this is adjustable in the water... I see that the normal adjustment require to hold the prop..... Hopefully not... I was thinking of just trying to move the adjustment barrel a turn or 2 to see if it helps.... not sure which way to go though.... Thoughts???

There should be an adjustment nut on the short cable that goes from the carb back down to the lower unit. Try messing with that in either direction until she shifts and recovers.

Another thing to look at, you may be idling too low. You want to be idling at 700-800 rpms or so. That’s an easy adjustment on the carb. Small screw on the throttle lever. In fact, I would try that first.

Yes, you can adjust it in water. Try 1 turn at a time tho, they are very finicky. I need atleast 3800 rpm to pass the hump. I power down to full, then when she drops i pull back to cruise speed. Normally 3800 rpm @ 30 mph

Thanks for the replies. I will try what you guys advised.
Hey GT, just to give you some confidence my port motor (4.3, Alpha 2Bl carb) would not go all the way into reverse, I had a tech come out and help me. In the water and like Jeff and Get Away said, he adjusted the nut. Didn’t take much and now it’s perfect and I feel I could do it myself

Hey crew, thought I would throw this on our thread first, what is the consensus on fuel additive? I’m on the fence between Stabil Marine, SeaFoam or Marvel Mystery oil. Getting ready to tank up Saturday so thought I would get some. Curious what has been used with good or bad results.

Just my humble opinion, but I’m not a fan of fuel additives at all. Stabil is good for long storage, but other than that, I have not seen them ever improve anything.

I use lucus fuel treatment. 1 bottle at every fuel up. 1 can bottle will do 100 gallons for about $20. Seafoam is $10 a can and only does 8 gallons. So you do the math

Did a fair bit of research on this prior to my first winterization last year. Ran the tank low (25%) towards the end of season and added 1 shot of Red Line SI1 and 20ltrs of gas to assist mixing. Aim was to stabilize the remaining fuel in the tank for winter storage and ‘clean the injectors’ during the final few runs of the season prior to haul out. Completed winterization by ‘fogging’ both units during the final run in the yard as a flushed the engines with glycol mix.
Don’t know if it’s worked yet as I’m about a week away from firing up for the first time this year. I intend to put in another shot of redline at the fuel station.....after launching..(..when I can afford a full tank....) as I’ve read it’s kinder to out older engines.

I use it when I put the boat away for the winter and I also use it when I know I'm not going to go through the fuel in a timely fashion.

I've been on the road for work going on the 2nd year so the boat doesn't get used like it normally would. I can go a few months on a tank of fuel so I'm adding some Stabil Marine when I know it's going to sit.

Took only about 2 hours to do. Thats with having to stop to save some drunken jerk off who fell of his boat while docking and nearly drowned. He is my new uncle earl of the dock. And fyi, the admiral had to take a pic of this mess before helping me. I taught her wellView attachment 105609

Wow! You probably should have let natural selection do it’s thing Jeff.:D

You're a good man.

Just installed the aqua marine flooring on my girl. Love it and feels great. Easy to do and was only $1,450. After install i sprayed with 303 fabric guard.View attachment 105598 View attachment 105599 View attachment 105600 View attachment 105601 View attachment 105602 View attachment 105603 View attachment 105604 View attachment 105605 View attachment 105607 View attachment 105608
Looks fantastic Jeff, goes well with the blue graphics and your canvas. The Queen is sold, on the other note. Remember nothing is fool proof to a sufficiently talented fool.
