Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

thanks for the pic. tough time of year to figure this kind of stuff out lol
Isn't it, though? I've looked more closely, and you can kind of see it in the sig shot, too: there's a lighter band that splits the black paint horizontally at the bow end, which is the gunk mark/actual water line. There's a pronounced wedge of black above it, partly due to angle of boat in water, but probably a little disproportional visually because it's also due to the contour of the boat rounding more sharply inward there.

Want me to measure? I might be able to go from the ridge below the side windows and give you an idea, or even just eyeball it and tell you if it runs exactly along any of the lower contours where the boat tapers underneath. I'm not using the right words, but hopefully you know what I mean.

Are yours like this? It's the closest match visually/functionally, and there are lots available; one lists dimensions of 4" x 4" x 4" so that might be ok and require only a little little jigsaw work to seat properly in the existing holes.

It's really weird that I haven't found ANY square or rectangular single-light replacements, only round singles or oval doubles. It's the darndest thing!

We may be out there this weekend so I'll snap a pic to share. And one of First Mate's friends tinkers with all things electrical, so there may be a long shot chance he could re-solder the socket or something and salvage it.

No, mine doesn't look anything like that. I might be crawling under the shrinkwrap this weekend to do a few things. If so, I'll try to remember to snap a picture of one of mine.

no, you don't have to do that. but thank you. I think Ill just eyeball it so it looks straight and level. My current boat, 87 26' robalo, the bottom paint jogs down on an angle an inch and a half or so in the same area right were the hull starts to curve under. not sure if i want to do that. at least i have a couple months to figure it out

That's pretty much how mine looks floating. I need to raise up the rear a good inch.

Let's see if this pic comes thru... The paint on my bow is like this, a lot of paint exposed, works ok for me.

This was taken just before I bought the boat. I kept the paint lines the same. Like I said I need to raise the rear up about an inch.

thanks, thats probably how I'm gonna do mine. id rather have some paint out of the water than barnacles on the gel coat. they're a pain to get off. something else I've noticed, some boats have their fwd blower vent (the intake) with the scoop fins facing aft. I installed mine facing fwd which I've also seen. my thoughts on that were while running the air is forced into the intake for better ventilation. makes sense to me though it doesn't look as streamlined. not planning on changing it just curious why they're installed both ways

Got a decent pic of the directional light over the dinette; 3.5" x 2.5". The depth of that overhang is slightly less than 5", so a 4 x 4 round fixture will fit (and possibly with little or no additional cutting), but I really like the compact size of the existing.

Have you tired any RV stores? I've found some lights that work on RV'S will work on our boats, specifically for reading.

I had the same problem and it was coming from the top of the arch from the various antennas, also I used rv gutters over the side blower vents to keep the water running down the gunnels out. also used the rv gutters on top of side windows. they work great and they aren't ugly. They attach with 3m double-sided tape and come in either black or white.

I haven't visited any stores yet; they're just not convenient to my usual routes and hours. Online there are plenty of round singles available in a larger size, and various doubles, just no rectangular singles so that I can replace the one and keep the other. I know they don't cost a ton, but since I like the style and size I'm holding out a bit.

Pics of how you've done the windows and vents?

T, I'm going down to the boat today or tomorrow. I will look to see if I can get you those lights.

Ive got the flu but I'm on the backside of it and the boss won't let me out of the house yet. So give me a few days.

Tomad, can you post so pics of your vents with the covers?

Will appreciate any leads, but definitely don't over do it, boatwise or otherwise!!!

If I don't get out of this house I'm gonna go into boat withdrawal.

How many any do you need if I can find them

Well, I do understand THAT sentiment! We got a small fix last weekend after being away from it 3 weekends in a row. Gotta fix a shift cable before we can launch and have a relaxing ride, but at least we got to sleep with waves lapping the hull!

Just need one light fixture if it matches....unless your secret stash has spares? ;)

anybody have any thoughts on carpeting? I've been looking for interior carpeting online, I like great lakes but they're in WI and Im in NJ. shipping is a killer. is there any difference between carpet that marine stores sell and regular indoor outdoor carpet?

Help! 1987 Sea Ray Sundancer 300 swim platform support issues. I have had the boat for three seasons. During the second season the starboard support screws pulled out of the transom, and I discovered the port screws were loose.

I poked around and found out the wood was rotted where the screws went into the transom on both sides. When I got done digging it all out it was luckily only 2" diameter of rotted wood. Not bad for what was at the time a 28 year old boat. I dried it all out as best I could over several weeks, repaired the holes, made up new brackets with thick wall stainless and stainless brackets that would typically be used topside. I relocated the screws a couple inches inboard of the repairs to hit solid fiberglass instead of drilling the repaired area.

THE PROBLEM: The brand new heavier screws on the starboard side rotted and broke again only a few months into the season. Does anyone have suggestions on what may be going on (i.e.electrolysis) and what I could/should do for a longer lasting solution?

I'm in the middle of a re-carpet job. I bought marine carpet for the cockpit that has a marine, wet-proof backing. For the cabin I purchased a tight-weave house carpet. I just don't see the need for marine carpet on the inside as we never go in the boat dripping wet. And, that's what was already in mine (regular carpet).

There are many places to get it. Carpet is hard for me to buy online but it's something fairly easy to find locally. I'm lucky as I live 20 minutes from the carpet capital of the world, Dalton, GA. But any local carpet store should have lots of options. Personally, I wouldn't go with traditional indoor/outdoor carpet, but about any indoor carpet will work in the cabin. You'll definitely need marine carpet for the cockpit, but any carpet store can get marine carpet as well.

If you'd like to price shop against the good prices in Dalton, or even consider having them ship you some, you can call Ingles Carpet. http://inglescarpetinc.com/ . I've recommended them to people in the past and was told that shipping was very reasonable.
