We made a offer on a 1993 40 express with 3116 cats 300 HP. Going to see the boat this week. Boat is now in fresh water, but has had a short time in salt. Engines have been rebuilt and now have 350 hrs on them. Can anyone help with advise on these engines. Is the 300Hp cats enough power for this boat.
Thank you in advance.

Yes....enough power and very efficient. I have a lot of time in a 400EC with Cats.......the boat is a sweetheart, handles like a ski boat and is very fast for a 40 ft boat.

Be sure to have a Cat survey done. One thing to watch on this hull that is frequently overlooked is the zinc condition on the heat exchangers. They are nearly impossible to get to so a lot of folks just ignore then, especially in fresh water. The problem is not the zincs but the fact that the broken off zinc parts can clog up the tube bundle inside the heat exchanger.

Thank you Frank,
Spoke with our locat cat dealer yesterday. Will take oil samples and have cat dealer survey engines. Dealer mentioned about soft blocks that were manufacured in France.

What was the cruise speed on your 40 express with 300 hp cats.

I don't own the boat......I picked it up at the owner's home and delivered it to the dealer marina for service. It was a PD&E boat built for a Sea Ray manager in 1995 and had non-standard 350hp/3116's. It was a solid 40 mph boat at WOT but cruised very nicely at 30 kts.

The 3116 did not have soft blocks. The block may have the dreaded FAPS casting number, but only the 3126 suffered from soft blocks, and not all of them were affected.
