After reading the thread on the Tuscon shootings and, respecting the many various points of view on what the "causes" of the shootings were, one thing came to my mind.

Collectively we have widely varying views on topics such as how to handle crime, gun control, the death penalty, etc.

One thing I think is relatively clear is that most of the people in Tucson as well those on here could fairly easily be put into three categories.....Sheep, Sheepdogs, and Wolves.

If you're not familiar with these categories, might I suggest you follow this link:
http://www.mwkworks.com/onsheepwolvesandsheepdogs.html and read the article. It's by a retired US Army Lt. Col and it is a good read.

After you have had a chance to read it in its entirety, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the article, and which of the three categories (Sheep, Sheepdogs and Wolves) you would put yourself into.

What a great read. Thanks for sharing. Like the article says, we are all sheep or sheep dogs by varying degrees of both. Unlike the wolves who decidedly commit crimes on the sheep and sheepdog. They have no gray area. They are the perpetrators and purveyors of evil.

I would like to think myself as a sheep dog having stood in the gap for a few sheep on small issues however many proven sheep dogs have made it so I haven't needed to test my metal in extreme conflict.

I thank them.

On Point!!! Many Thanks to all Sheepdogs!

Doesn't apply in this situation. The shooter here is mentally ill. He didn't choose a life of crime, but the system failed in preventing it. When he attempted to attend college, they screened him out and told him to get treatment before he came back. Well, there was no treatment available. Arizona is one of the worst states for the treatment of mental disorders. I think there is only one state with fewer treatment beds for the seriously mentally ill, which is Nevada.

3 years ago in MN, a Mom and Dad took their Son to a huge Medical Facility here in MN for Mental Illness. They told the staff they felt there son was unstable and capable of hurting himself or others. After HOURS of evaluations, the staff agreed with the parents. Then told him there were no beds availiable and they would get a hold of them next week or when something came available. That was the last day the parents ever saw. That night the kid killed them both.

It could be said that anyone that commits murder is mentally ill. How else can a person justify killing innocent people.
When do we come back to personal restraint and accountability as a member of society?

Is there no social ill that is not classified as a disease today? No one is held accountable for there crimes against the innocent any more.

We will convict military personal for atrocities yet let the very ones they are protecting commit the same.

This guy was a functioning member of society knowing well what he was doing. He is now playing the media like a violin. There is a vast difference between a emotionally psychotic killer and this guy. He exhibits no psychosis and is reveling in the attention.

Just my humble opinion.

Just watching the replies here. 120 people have viewed it yet only 9 have replied. Are the rest of you not wanting to read what the Lt. Colonel had to say, or have you read it and disagree with his comments or been embarassed about the category you fall into? Why the low number of posters vs the number who have viewed it?

Matthew 7:15-16 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

Sheep beware.

An excellent read, right on the money, and oh so true! I would humbly place myself in the Sheepdog category. I devote a fair amount of money, and a small amount of time (it's never enough!) preparing and training for it. Man's inhumanity to man surpasses anything the animal world can dish out. I've resolved to do everything I can to be sure myself and my family do not become victims.

Did you see his mugshot? Did you see the 60-Minutes piece on him tonight?

The guy is a POS, clearly. But psychotic too. I'd say a human can be both.

Clearly as FC3 and you state, there is some critical sane thinking missing in this person yet to call it a disease is presumptuous on our part. It will be up to the court and the Psychiatrist to determine the level. We could all say that Charles Manson is insane however he still must be held accountable for his crimes against society as this POS should be.

I believe that the wolves of the world do think differently than the sheep and sheep dog. Is it environmental, social, or mental conditions that cause people to become wolves? Yes, but that does not excuse their action or negate them from prosecution.

BTW . I know you and FC3 have not said the guy is innocent of this crime.

Again, this is my opinion and I'm open to comment on it.

Nicky, this is why all sheep and sheepdogs need a strong shepherd. Someone they can hear and they know his voice and can find strength and truth in it. Without the shepherd the sheep stray and the sheep dogs become like the wolves.

I know this voice and it causes me to be a better person and stand in the gap for those who can not.

I saw some data that indicates a preliminary diagnosis of pretty acute schizophrenia. Not my field and I'm not really following this case, but it's everywhere and I sometimes bump into an article.

We make a drug, actually more than one, for schizophrenia. I don't know that much more about the subject.

Charles Krauthammer, conservative commentator, Fox contributor, and licensed clinical psychiatrist says he's a classic paranoid schizophrenic in his latest column.

Thank you and FC3 for the updates. I need to be careful here to not let my opinion mix in with known fact. I believe there comes a time when every person decides how they will respond to a stimulus. It is that point that I speak to. The point at which time a person says I'm going this direction be damned about the consequences.

I know many will debate whether a person has the ability to make this decision due to mental duress but the decision is made none the less.

Just my opinion and open to comment.
