Oddball question: While detailing my new to me 2006 185 Sport earlier this evening I noticed that the bottom 1/3 of the hull from the transom to the center of the boat is a light brown in color, however only on the starboard side. I'm assuming it's from a water stain although this doesn't explain why it's only one one side of the hull. Perhaps only 1/2 the hull was cleaned before winter storage. I have tried 3M marine cleaner/wax which I am using on the rest of the hull which will remove it with a fair amount of elbow grease. Any other thoughts as to what it might be?

Thanks.

Maybe that part of the boat was covered by something that blocked the sun and prevented the sun from bleaching out the color? Just guessing here, obviously.

Those are stains from the tannin in the water. Even being dry stored my bottom gets stains from the lake water still on it when they lift it out. Lake Norman is pretty clean so it's not bad, but some lakes it is terrible. Each spring I use a hull cleaner like Star Brite Hull Cleaner, then a coat of wax. Pour it in a spray bottle, spray it on, wait 5min and hose it off. Since I started waxing it once a year it seems to stay much cleaner.

I use a product called "Iron Out" a little less aggressive than Hull cleaner.

Works for me on "stain" mix in a gallon pressure sprayer spray on and rinse off after a couple minutes.

I've found that Fiberglass Stain Remover works well for removing rust stains and other black or brown stuff from the gel coat. I apply it with a soft brush, let sit for a minute, and then rinse off. Usually takes no scrubbing. I think it uses oxalic acid, similar to Bar Keepers Friend cleanser and wood bleach.

There are two types, the really strong stuff (which I have only used once) is like Mary Kate On/Off, it has muriatic acid in it it and is really caustic stuff, but is amazing on removing tough water stains. I use the milder ones that still have an acid , but the milder oxolic acid. This is the way to get the stains off, just use the proper protection, even a small whiff of the spray will get your attention.

If you use the acid and the boat is on a trailer take care not to get it on the trailer.

+1! Especially aluminum...wet it good and continue to keep it wet and you are good.

FSR, Iron Out, and Mary Kate will turn aluminum white.
