I am attempting to make my first long distance trip from NYC to Sag Harbor Long Island. I was looking for some assistance in planning the trip and had the following questions:

The charts as I read them indicate it is about 45 nautical miles, is this correct?

Can you enter from the Long Island sound through Orient Point to get to Sag Harbor?

Can you tell me where fueling stations are along the way ?

Thanks

First of all it way more than 45 nm from New York Harbor to Sag Harbor. The straight line distance from the Battery to Sag is around 80, so you are looking at a 100+mile trip.

Navigating up the East River and into Long Island Sound is an interesting trip, but can be challenging. You state that this is your first long trip, but do your have the requisite coastal navigation skills to deal with heavy commercial traffic, high currents, converging channels and potential adverse weather conditions?

Along the route, depending on whether you favor the CT shore of the LI shore, you will find plenty of fuel stops along the way.

And, yes, at the Eastern end of LIS you will round Orient Point - passing through Plum Gut.

I would say it's about 110 miles. Since your boat has limited range, I would hug the CT side. There's a stretch from port jef to mauntak were you can't get fuel on the LI side. I would try to go through plum gut at slack tide if possible, plum gut scared the hell out of me the first time in my 280. Big ferry boats too. You may hit fog out east, so take that into account.

As others have stated, Plum Gut can be interesting and scary at times. Once you are through Plum Gut watch out for lobster traps on the right hand side. They are typically lined up all the way to Greenport and difficult to see at times. Watching the weather is key on the sound. Have a good trip.

I don't have a lot of long distance experience but you guys are scaring the crap out of me!!!:wow:

Yes it is longer than 45mi.
Get a chart book and a good gps and a Long Island Sound cruising guide all avail from West M or similar place
Then all your questions will be easy.
Very doable in a 27ft boat.
Have a great time.
:)

You could also do the south shore run, inside on the Intra Coastal Waterway or out in the ocean to Shinecock inlet and thru the canal. Sag Harbor is just east of Shinecock Canal. Taking the canal saves you about 80 miles vs. going around Montauk point.

Dont let the Plum Gut get the better of you. I go through maybe 20 times a year, for the last 12 to 15 years and I can count on one hand the times it raised a brow. Maybe I have been fortunate. I recently experienced the waterways inside the south shore of LI, very low water and not for the faint of heart, especially those of us with phobias. That being said it is a beautiful area but LIS is the best way in my opinion. Its a great trip you should enjoy it if you do your homework - best of luck.

It's a great trip, i have done it a bunch of times. Its a good 5 hours cruising from hells gate at 22knts on average. I usually refuel at mount Sinai (north shore of long island), it's much easier than port jeff. Watch the markers entering Sag Harbor.
Which marina are you staying at?
